Hello OpenMRS community,

I am looking for some help for a project I am part of.
We want to develop a "ready (or at least easy) to deploy" cloud based EMR+reporting solution (with, down the road, more components) for medical NGOs operating in developing countries.

After a couple of rounds of research, from a technical standpoint OpenMRS seemed a very good system to all IT people involved. But when we started trying to adapt it as a generic EMR, the consulting doctor involved in the project warned us that it does not look/behave as he would expect a EMR to behave.

We found many case studies, and we are aware that OpenMRS is supposed to be a platform to develop EMRs, not a final product: but is there any way to get pointed to the quickest way to have a generic EMR, something we could adapt/simplify/build on?
I have been looking everywhere, but I could have missed the right guide/component/module.

Also: I joined the project as a big picture IT consultant, I am not a java specialist, and I already spent far too many days configuring Tomcat and Java on virtual machines, I would love to be pointed in the right direction.

Thank you all in advance.

Alessandro, I look forward to the implementers responses to your request and in particular to “But when we started trying to adapt it as a generic EMR, the consulting doctor involved in the project warned us that it does not look/behave as he would expect a EMR to behave”.

The statement raises many questions.

·         What does that person define as an EMR?

·         Is he expecting to see the EMR a version of the existing paper record?

·         The person(s) need to list their requirements for the EMR and its functionalities and is your physician able to do this?

I have attached a paper that is very relevant to your enquiry and is authored by the primary creators of OpenMRS.

Terry Hannan

Hi Alessandro,

We are imminently releasing OpenMRS 2.0, which is closer to the clinician-facing EMR you're looking for (but still will need lots of further work and development). Expect to see an email about this tomorrow.

For now, this is the upcoming introductory documentation for it: https://wiki.openmrs.org/x/zgBYAw .

Thank you for the replies.

Darius, thank you, I actually think I had a look since 2.0 appears as a release here
but it also gave me a lot of Java hiccups...

At the moment, we are looking into seeing if it is possible to customize the KenyaEMR for our needs.

Terry:

The statement raises many questions.

These are actually the questions in which we ran into.
Personally, I am new to health IT, so I even the "requirement collection" phase is not going as smoothly as it could in project where I know more of the subject matter...

At the moment, I have a small list of fields/requirement, and I have to see how quickly they can be implemented in OpenMRS...

It would be helpful for you to describe in detail what you mean by " the consulting doctor involved in the project warned us that it does not look/behave as he would expect a EMR to behave" Fortunately there are a lot of clinicians in the openMRS community that can help answer some of the questions.

Some updates, and a request for help:

I am currently cooperating as IT consultant and project manager with a project of the German Heart Institute for developing an easy to access EMR and medical cooperation system for NGOs.

After some research, we tentatively choose OpenMRS as a platform, having the impression that it would a good start to quickly get a working generic EMR to offer to NGOs. We wanted something with similar basic as KenyaEMR, but more generic, since our goal would be to offer some training for the usage, not to either offer continuous tech support, or requiring users to have their own IT staff.

More than 4 weeks of tests later, we are beginning to suspect we were mistaken.

At this point, if we want to go on with OpenMSR, we need help, because we risk of waste all our funding trying to first have OpenMRS run stabily, then implement the basics we need.

Where can we get support? With some serious hand-holding?

This could be commercial/payed for support, as long as it is from developers that know the system well and are able to get us quickly up to speed: our developers could, but it would take time, and this is not the goal of our project.

Thank you in advance,

Alessandro Pedori

Hi Alessandro,

These are some of the organizations that i have seen being paid to customize OpenMRS for various implementations:

Hi Alessandro, it might help prospective supporting organizations if you had something more specific written/described for them to understand.

Specifically, what functional requirements do you need to satisfy for your project?  How are you wanting to use an "easy to access EMR and medical cooperation system for NGOs"?
