All,
I have spent hours to try to figure out how to make a zig-zag, arbitrary traverse cross section in a 2D survey.  Still nothing.

I am new to OpendTect and am in version 7.0.9.
I need to find a comprehensive help manual for it.  ChatGPT bases answers on older versions, where terminology (buttons, location of windows, etc) seems to be different.

Is there a good manual with instructions out there?  the ones I find are not very good.... .

Hi Martin,

In the 2D seismic manager, you can double-click a data set name to open the manager for the associated lines; a merge icon is located on the right-hand side. However, this utility is currently buggy and has an unclear UII have submitted a bug report to address these issues.

In the meantime, I suggest merging lines outside of OpendTect or, preferably, working within the 3D scene where merging lines is generally unnecessary.

Regarding documentation, you can access the user manuals via the Help menu or by clicking the "?" icon within a UI window to go directly to the relevant section. Please note that there are separate manuals for the open-source version and the commercial version (OpendTect Pro + dGB plugins). Additional resources, including videos, training manuals, and "How To" workflows, are available in the Help menu or under the Resources section of the dGB website.

I hope this helps.

Best regards,

Paul.

Thank You.
What I am looking for are actual instructions on how to create a continuous cross section using 2D lines in a map view.
I am new to this software and have been using it three days now... .

Hi Martin,

I'm afraid that I do not understand your request. A 2D survey in OpendTect means you only have 2D lines. I do not know what you mean with "how to create a continuous cross section using 2D lines in a map view.". Apparently, you do not want to merge crossing 2D lines into a single 2D line, which is how I interpreted your request.

Do you actually have 3D seismic data, and are you trying to create a random line through this 3D volume? If so, there are several options for how to do this. Right-click on the Random Line entry in the tree and select the New menu. See the user documentation on how each of these options works. The training manual and videos also include examples of these training exercises. If you are an OpendTect Pro user you can also draw the trajectory on the basemap.

Best regards,

Paul.

Thank You.

Sorry for not being clear.

I only have 2D seismic lines. I can view all of them in a 3D Scene, in a Map View, or individually in the 2D Viewer.

The 2D lines are arranged so that they cross each other, forming one set oriented E–W and another oriented N–S. Together, they create an intertwined 3D grid.

I want to create cross sections that follow a zig-zag path:

  1. Start along one line.

  2. Pick a portion of a perpendicular line.

  3. Turn again to another segment, repeating as needed.

The goal is to display this as a single 2D line, because my seismic lines do not align perfectly, and this is the best way to QC the data and visualize mis-ties.

It’s unfortunate that I cannot attach an image here, as it would make the concept much easier to show.

OK. Thanks, in that case my first response was correct. We have a utlity that is supposed to work on two lines per run. So, you would have to run this multiple times to create a zig-zag. As explained te utility is flawed, hence cannot be used.

Sorry, but yout best bet is to find a solution outside OpendTect.

Best regards,

Paul.
