Day 1 with OpendTect. I started a new project. Imported a large 3D and made the mistake of going for SEGYDirect. Tried to Pre-load the data but not enough space where the OpendTect data root was initially located.(I was hoping to keep the loaded seismic data in a  separate  drive where I have lots of room as I have done with other software. 

I assume that this is not possible?

To proceed I think I need the opendtect data root to be in the larger drive?

How do I do that? Can I just copy and paste or do I need to start again?

Hello Chas,

Welcome to the OpendTect user community. 

You can have more than one OpendTect Root directory, each with its own set of OpendTect projects. Please be aware that each Root directory must be created by OpendTect and not by Windows file explorer or equivalent tool on Linux or MAC. This you do in the Survey Setup window. After you have created your new Root directory, you can copy the entire project in the file explorer from the old Root directory to the new one. Please note that your copy command must copy all sub-folders and all hidden files. To be on the safe side, I recommend zipping the project before copying it across.

Regarding the SEGYDirect issue, that is not a real problem. In fact we recommend it as it saves disk space to leave the data in the original format (most often SEGY but we also support direct import for newer (faster) formats such as VDS and ZGY). If you use direct import, we recommend moving the original file(s) to the Seismic sub-folder or to a new folder created by you in the file explorer inside the project folder before importing these. If the original data remains outside the project folder, it will not be backed up or archived when you are finished.

You can use the Seismic Relocate tool (2nd icon from the top) in the Seismic Manager (icon in the upper right corner of the main window) to relocate the SEGY files if need be.

I just checked and noticed that the "Relocate" button does not work for SEGY files. The easiest way forward therefore is to reload the data from the location where you want to have the SEGY files located.

Currently I have the segy in F and the opendtect data root in F.

Would like the opendtect data root in D  and the seismic in F. Is there a way to fix?

Provided you have fast access to F, I would create a root directory in F. Put the SEGY in F (preferably inside a sub-folder after having created the project in the F data root) and load it. Please note that you probably will create many more data sets in the project once you start. Since you have space on F, you want to have your entire project on F and not the SEGY only.

PS. If you experience long waiting times when loading data, you may want to load the data from SEGY and save it in VDS as this format is faster (at least for 3D).

To explain a little better, the software I was using allowed the seismic to be saved anywhere and in my set up I put the seismic on a NAS drive (F) with lots of room that doesn't need to have snapshots (back-ups) taken. Ideally the smaller drive (D) is where the project is set up (opendtect root directory) and where the interpretation is backed up with snapshots.
