Horizon depth conversion "buckets"

Hey all.

I have been attempting to depth convert some horizons I have correlated on some seismic data and, using the well check-shot, it produces some funny 'bucket'-like outputs on the "depth window" when viewed - the interpreted horizon essentially gets surrounded by stuff (non-interpreted) that is much shallower in depth.

Any suggestions?

Hi Ikenna,

Sorry to hear this and thank you for bringing it to our attention.
We actually received a very similar report overnight via the support channel; the other user also reported 'edge effects' on depth-converted horizons.
I've reported these two issues together for investigation and will update you as & when we have some more information on why this is happening, a workaround or a fix.

Could you please just confirm in which version of OpendTect you're seeing this issue? 7.0.10 or some earlier version?

Dear Ikenna,

Am I correct to assume that you created the horizon in another software package? Be that as it may, here are two ways to remove the "fence" around your data.

1. You can go to either basemap or Scene (must be in>View North Z> Switch to orthographic Camera
2. Select the polygon tool. The "remove selection"button (thrash can below) will turn red. Using the polygon tool you can now remove unwarranted areas on the horizon, once you click "remove selection"after you defined a polygon.

A more elegant way is to use OpendTect Horizon Math 3D calculation. Your picture shows that the points to be eliminated have a much shallower traveltime than the rest of your horizon data. Assuming that your "good" data is deeper than, for instance, 900ms, you can apply Horizon Math 3D, and clean up your data in the time domain before converting to depth. Please note that the traveltimes MUST be defined in seconds, nort in milliseconds.

Hi Ikenna,

Here is a simple way to remove the unwanted values:
  1. Draw a polygon around the part of the horizon that is good
  2. Open the Horizon manager and press the Copy horizon icon 
  3. Select Area subselection, option Polygon
