Hello,

I updated Opencast from Version 3.x to 4.3 and integrated the newest version of the paella player for opencast (5.2.10). We use HLS streaming in combination with the newest version of wowza and usually deliver two streams in parallel (presenter, presentation) to our viewers. Everything works fine if I play the opencast recordings in desktop browsers or on android devices but that is not the case on iOS devices.

On iOS devices I can only see the buffering/loading symbol of the paella player on a grey background but nothing more happens (the player respectively the recordings does/do not load at all). The only thing that seems to help is to use the "Request desktop Site" function of the Safari Browser (but that is i. e. no solution for older/slower iOS devices -> the browser window crashes
after a short time if I want to play the recordings this way on this kind of devices).

Has anyone perhaps encountered a similar problem and knows a fix/workaround for it (except the workaround to use the "Request desktop Site" function)?

Best regards

Hello Oliver

My bet is that something is happening to HLS and paella is able to play in other devices (or in desktop mode in Safari) either through MP4 download or DASH.

Maybe somwthing is wrong between the HLS URL in the media package and the actual URL served by wowza. Could you check it?

Hi,

we use a similar configuration: HLS, DASH, no HTML5  and wowza streaming server (OC 4.3, Paella 5.2.10)

We can not see this problem on iOS devices. Dual stream videos are playing on my iPhone 8 and also on my iPad with Safari and Chrome.
The only confusing thing, we noticed, is the fact, that on these devices the first slide is not shown correctly and one sees a black screen
As soon as you click on the next slide or another slide everything is ok.

All streams are delivered by HLS as the wowza access log file shows.

If I remember correctly we had a similar problem at the beginning of the last winter semester, when two "real" videos were displayed.
Older devices with lower memory were not able to play two videos simultaneously, also older iOS versions. One single video was not a problem.
We asked Valencia to have a look on that and they did a fix (Oct. 27th).

Since then we did not see that problem anymore.

Regards
Ruth

Hi Ruth, Hi Carlos,

many thanks for the information so far. I will check if something went wrong between Wowza and Opencast or if something is wrong with our paella Opencast configuration perhaps.

Best regards
Oliver
