Hi,

a few weeks ago our technicians installed an Extron SMP 351 in one of the lecture halls.

Tests and lecture recordings of 90 minutes with camera and presentation went well with our Opencast.
Today we scheduled a recording of 210 minutes and the uploaded tracks do not have the same length.
Also we noticed that there are three mp4 files in the internal file system of the SMP 351 instead of  two.

Has anyone else the same problems ?
Is there a limitation regarding the length of a file  (it seems to be a Windows file system) ?

Any hints are welcome
-Ruth

Hello Ruth,

a quick guess would be that the process capturing one of the inputs
failed somewhere in between, resumed, and the SMP 351 stitched those two
parts together, resulting in a small gap which could explain the
differing lengths? Maybe skip around the recording, watching at what
point the two streams get out of sync?

Regards,

Jan

Hello Ruth.

Did anything relevant show up in the logs of the SMP 351? We regularly have recordings that span 4+ hours without problems.

Cheers,
Justin

Hi Ruth,

another quick guess: the SMPs like to split files at a certain length.
So, maybe:

* the 90 mins went fine because the SMP created 1 file for each channel
* the 210 mins were a problem, because the SMP created 1 file for
channel A and 2 files for channel B (the camera?).
* quick check would be if file 2+3 (channel B) result in the same length
as file 1 (channel A)

(on the web-interface the setting lives here:
Configuration->System
Settings->RecordingMediaSelection->LimitRecordingSize.)

We have switched that off because on split files only parts got uploaded
to OC.

Hi all,

thanks a lot for all your quick hints.

@Andreas
Your tip was the essential one.
The max file size is limited by default to 3,5 GB, which is exactly the length of the camera track after 2.5 h.
I assume this is why another camera file was created.

We have now unchecked this option in "Configuration->System Settings->RecordingMediaSelection->LimitRecordingSize"
and we will do a further test tomorrow. But I am quite sure this was the error.

Thanks
-Ruth

Hello Ruth,

you mentioned a "windows file system" - was this FAT32 by any chance?
That would explain a max file size of 3,5GB + wiggle room, AFAIK FAT32
can only store 4GiB files max.

Hi Jan,

It was only an assumption, that the file system is a „window file system“, because it looks like an explorer view (icons, …)
We will di some tests in the next days.

Hi all,

I work for an Extron dealer in the commercial AV space. Took a quick look at the manual, and they say this about filesystems:

"The SMP 300 Series supports FAT32, NTFS, and VFAT long file names, EXT2, EXT3 and EXT4 formats for USB drives that are used for file storage. [Note: A 3.8 file size limit is placed on FAT32 drives.]"

So, for USB storage, it can be effectively anything one wants. Internally, the SMP 351 is a Linux appliance, so I'd bet the onboard FS is EXT[234].

The manual should be available for download here or at the product page. (An Extron.com login should not be necessary.)
