For opencast 8, is the automated subtitling feature, does it mean opencast automatically captions the video once we upload it or do we still need to use Google Speech to generate captioning?

You will need an commercial service to create the captions like Google Speech or IBM Watson. Nibity and Amberscript are currently under development.

We are looking at Mozilla DeepSpeech as an free alternative, but DeepSpeech is still version 0.6 and seems not mature enough for the integration yet.

So I have exactly followed the steps given (link below) here to enable Google Speech (except for step 5 and 6 since those workflows as samples were already created unless I am supposed to add them somewhere else).

I have uploaded a video to test it out and I've checked the workflow operations and according to google-speech-start-transcription.xml, when workflow 1 starts I am supposed to see the two following operations:
  1. Extract audio for transcript generation
  2. Start Google Speech Transcription Job
However, I am not seeing any of these operations being executed. I am attaching my org.opencastproject.transcription.googlespeech.GoogleSpeechTranscriptionService.cfg: (my GoogleID  stuff were edited)

Hi,

Your configuration looks fine other than you shouldn't share on a public list your google client and secret details. So my advise is to create new one.

As for the Google Speech, you need to trigger it once your uploaded video has been processed and archived.
Select you uploaded video form the 'Events' page, choose 'Action', then 'Start Task'. You'll then be able to select the google-speech-start transcription workflow (https://docs.opencast.org/r/8.x/admin/#workflowoperationhandlers/google-speech-start-transcription-woh/) which will deal with extracting  and encoding audio.
The second workflow which attached the subtitle to the mediapackage runs automatically https://docs.opencast.org/r/8.x/admin/#workflowoperationhandlers/google-speech-attach-transcription-woh/

Regards,
Franck

Is there any way to edit the generated captions once I have them?

Not at this moment. There is a plugin for Paella Player [1] that allows to edit the captions, but as today it doesn’t put the captions back.

AFAIK
