Dear all

This is to inform you that we have just released the updated Paella Player 4. The focus of the work in the new release has been not only to develop new features, but to work on reliability and stability of the player. We think we have done a big step on that.

As usual, we have released Paella 4 both for standalone and Opencast Matterhorn platform. Paella 4 standalone is in the paella repository and the Matterhorn version is in the paella-matterhorn repository, which is internally linked to the paella one

The outstanding new features in Paella 4 are

* Better Video Quality management, by changing video source to higher quality file seamlessly when switching to full screen
* Video download bandwidth improved in multi resolution videos.
* Dual audio in dual track videos: Configurable option to mute one of the sources for desktop browsers.
* Multiple speed support in HTML5 mode.
* New options for easier skinning
* Support for zoom-in the teacher view using high-resolution still images (look at the "Blackboard" demo)

A more detailed changelog is here. Documentation has been also updated, so reading it you should find how to configure and use the new features.

We have also solved some nasty bugs, including the dual audio issue (for desktops only ) and the issue that happened when calling the page, the video plays for half a second.

Regarding the Firefox support, let me tell you that we have worked a lot on that. The current state is that Paella is working with Firefox for all browsers and platforms in RTMP mode and for Windows, Linux and Mobile in download (HTTP) mode. It is not working correctly in download mode for Firefox versions 32 to 34 + MacOSX. However it is working in Firefox 35 beta, which should be released in early January 2015, so our idea is waiting for that release. As a dirty workaround, if you need to make Paella work for Firefox versions 32 to 34 + MacOSX you will have to disable the Firefox cache or just to switch the Firefox cache to the v1 mode.

I want to thank the support from ETH Zurich and all the people that have helped us in contributing, testing and debugging between paella 3 and 4, specially Daniel, Dietmar, Edmore, Karen, Markus, Olaf, Vincenzo, Xavier and Stefanos (sorry if I forget somebody )

I guess that's all (by the moment). Paella website is at http://paellaplayer.upv.es and you can test Paella 4 at the official demo page at http://paellaplayer.upv.es/?page=demo.

Comments are welcomed

Carlos

P.S: We are working on a small utility to create media packages for Paella standalone. We feel that it can be useful so we plan to release it in the next days.

P.S 2: Sorry for the long post ;-)

Hi Carlos,

Congratulations on the release and the job well done. I hadn't had the chance to take a look to what you've been working on and I have to say it looks sharp!

I'll be having some rice for lunch to celebrate :))))

Regards.
