Hi all,

we have some users who have choppy playback when streaming HLS in Paella Player (video jumps back or pauses suddenly). It primarily affects macOS and iOS users as far as I can see. Since we don't play the videos directly from Presentation Node, but through Wowza Streaming Server, there may be an incorrect setting there as well. Does anyone have experience or tips on what I can still adjust? One of the affected users has opened a bug in Paella Player, but I would almost assume that our Wowza server is to blame: https://github.com/polimediaupv/paella/issues/630

Regards

Stephan

Hi Stephan

I would also blame on the Wowza Server. In order to play HLS streams, Paella uses Apple native video player for macOS and iOS and hls.js for all the other cases.

So, my guess is that it is something that Apple’s native playback system doesn’t like in that stream. Try to open directly the underlying HLS stream in the wowza server and see if it’s already choppy. If that’s the case you’ll have to tweak the configuration parameters there

Hi Carlos,

It is definitely not a problem of the Wowza server,  nor a problem with macOS or iOS devices, but a problem with the Safari browser and the Paella Player on Safari.

Alternatively we offer another Player (videoJS) to stream Opencast videos (using also Wowza Steaming Engine, same URL as for Paella) and you will see no problems with the Safari browser.
There are also no problems with Paella on these Apple devices if you use an browser like Firefox od Chrome.

Regards
Ruth

Hi Ruth

Thanks for the insight. Just to be sure: Safari in macOS or Safari in any platform?

Hi Carlos,

it's Safari on macOS and on iOS. I think even on iPad OS.

Hi Carlos,

all Apple devices are affected and I do now know who is using Safari voluntarily on other devices (if this would work at all i:-)
