Hi all,

Does anyone have product recommendations for USB 2.0 extenders over CAT5/6 cable to use a Logitech C930 webcam a significant distance away from a Capture Agent (e.g. around 40m)?

We have tested the Unitek Y-2507 without success (i.e. it doesn't work properly).

There are a couple of products that claim Linux and webcam compatibility, e.g.

http://www.aten.com/products/Mobility-&-USB/USB-Extenders/USB-2.0-Extender~UCE260.html#.VrOI9jZ95E7

We'd be interested to know if anyone has tested these, or has a working configuration in production (webcam > extender receiver > CAT5 > extender sender > capture agent).

Regards

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Back in the CA development days we had an active USB cable that I think we use for this purpose. I don't remember if it was that long, but it might have been close. Have you considered going that route? Or is the ethernet cabling a hard requirement?

Hi Greg,

We've used quite a few of these 10m or 20m active extenders that work fine:

http://www.unitek-products.com/en/product_detail.php?id=23

but in some venues the installed conduits are such that only CAT5/6 is possible.

Cheers

Stephen

hi stephen,

we have used the extron ones before
http://www.extron.com/product/product.aspx?id=usbextender though i think
for smart boards not capture agents. they are extremely expensive though...

thanks,

paul.

Hi stephen

we've tried startech usb over cat5 extenders with success up to 50m for lecturesight, but this was only a test. they work also well with usb mics.

looking around i found that these two products might be worth a look at as well however i have no experience with them:
and heres a promo video testing them (take it with a pinch of salt):

hope you find something suitable, its really hit and miss!

Here we are using a USB extender of 10m, It's way out of the USB specs, but it works.
