Hi all,

which linux distro do you use or recommend as an alternative for CentOS?

Just piggy backing off of this post. Has anyone switched over to AlmaLinux 8 from CantOS? Curious about what issues were faced (if any).

Hi,

We switched with no problem from CentOS 7 to RHEL 9.

Best regards,

Lylian.

Hi,

in the past few weeks I have also switched our entire cluster to RL9 without any issues.

Greetings,
Dietmar

Hi everyone,
maybe I can add a few notes as Opencast RPM package maintainer and
admin at Osnabrück University.

I strive to be compatible with RHEL, CentOS Stream, Rocky and Alma.
Right now, the EL9 and upcoming EL10 RPMs are built on CentOS Stream
and the EL8 RPMs are built on Rocky, but that should make no difference
and you should be able to use RedHat Enterprise Linux or AlmaLinux
without a problem. If you do run into any problem, unexpected as it may
be, please reach out and I'll take a look and try to fix the issue.

At Osnabrück University, we run Opencast on CentOS Stream 9 since we
upgraded to Opencast 14 about a year ago. We run on CentOS Stream 8
before that. We are considering to move to Rocky. Not that we have any
problems with CentOS Stream, but our data center is using Rocky as
default and since we don't really care, that would lead to a more
homogeneous OS landscape. That being said, I'll upgrade to OC16 on
Tuesday and still use CS9 :D

As mentioned earlier, I'm about to release packages for EL10. They may
come with OC16 and will definitely come with OC17. On the other hand,
EL7 has now been discontinued and there will be no new packages.

I hope this helps.
All the best,
Lars

Hi Lars,

last week I was indeed confronted with an issue, namely that the FFMPeg 6.1 version installed from the Opencast EL9 RPM repos has a memory leak bug which that can cause cutting operations to abort and results in a forced restart of Opencast by the system. The problem is described here: https://github.com/opencast/opencast/issues/5595

Greetings,
Dietmar

Hi Dietmar,
which version of Opencast are you running? The current versions of the
repository should already contain FFmpeg 7.x.

Hi Lars,

I'm running 15.x. In the Opencast repo is still only version 6.1 available.

Dietmar

Hi Dietmar,
ah, I didn't check for 15. Opencast 16 and 17 already have newer
versions.

Would you mind testing the new version with Opencast 15.x? It should
work just fine, but I'd still like to have this tested before I push it
into the old repository.

You can install the new Version by running:

dnf install https://pkg.opencast.org/rpms/release/el/9/oc-17/x86_64/ffmpeg-7.0.2-1.el9.x86_64.rpm

If that works, I'll push the new version of FFmpeg to the 15.x repo as
well.

Hi Lars,

I've tested FFMpeg 7.x installed from the repo mentioned above (https://pkg.opencast.org/rpms/release/el/9/oc-17/x86_64/ffmpeg-7.0.2-1.el9.x86_64.rpm): as expected, it works with Opencast 15 withpout any issues.

Greetings,
Dietmar

Hi Dietmar,
thanks for testing. FFmpeg 7.0.2 is now in the Opencast 15, 16 and 17
repositories for el8 and el9.
