Hi All,

This is my first post and I am kinda new to SDN.

I work for a large organization with dual DC sites, lately we started looking at ways to implement and make use of SDN technology. We, as many other organizations, heavily use VMware environment everywhere with multiple vCentre etc...(but not NSX yet).

First thing that came to mind when we started looking at SDN is VMware NSX. We looked at it, got a lot of pre-sale support from VMware explaining how can NSX deliver SDN functionality on top of our already existing Cisco network etc.... and all is looking good.

At the same time I discovered ONOS and gotten very much fond of it.

Our network is all Cisco Nexus based, a combination of 5k, 7k and 9k. But only running NXOS not ACI OS. Also our network is fairly recent and i don't see us ripping it all apart and replacing it with ACI capable switches and modules. This means that we will have to look at an SDN Overlay Implementation model.

We are also currently replacing all of our server infrastructure with new Chassis and these come with smart OpenFlow enabled hardware switches.

This is where NSX or hopefuly ONOS come into play.

My questions to you all are:

1- Do you consider ONOS to be a complete replacement for NSX?
2- Would ONOS implementation work with hosts running VMware ESXi 6.x?
3- Can you please point me to some links (if any) that explain how would that look  like and work?
4- Have you seen this work in large organizations running ESXi hosts succesfully?

Any thoughts around this subject will be highly appreciated.

Many thanks
Yakout

Yakout,

While I perfectly understand what ESX can do for you, I'm not an NSX expert
I'd suggest we step back and let's talk about requirements before than the tools.

What are your requirements?

This way it will be easier for us to tell you if ONOS can well cover them.

Best,

-Luca
