and The study is descriptive but not inferential.

Hi,

Consider some election held place in your city and a exit poll was conducted to predict which party is going to win. Since, prediction in  exit poll was made on the basis of public opinion and previous knowledge, they don't know who voted for whom, that is making prediction in exit poll comes under inferential statistics not descriptive statistics.

Now, consider actual result was declared, since they declared result by collecting all the data about votes and then by summarizing it by using measure of central tendency(mode) and describing or summarizing the data comes under descriptive statistics. Hence, declaration of actual result is descriptive statistics not inferential statistics.

According to me, the study cannot be Inferential without descriptive nature of the sample or population that is studied to draw conclusion from the data set.The description and summarization of data of either sample or population is required to be coupled with the concept of probability to use inferential statistics to draw conclusion from the data.Please feel free to correct me, thank you!

As u have said that actual result was declared by collecting all data about the votes and then by summarizing it then it should be both descriptive and inferential statistics coz we can infer that the particular party has won or lost. Please clear my doubt

It will not be a prediction as you have all the data with you. Now, you only need to organize the data to know which party has won. It is not the prediction, it is the exact result.

That is quite true, but while we infer about the data, we usually won't be describing the sample. Instead we will be predicting the population. Descriptive analysis should relate to, as per my understanding, on summarizing the sample itself while not giving any judgement of the population. So if we draw estimates of population from samples, we infer but not describe. Again this my view. Open to any counter arguments!

What I understood in election example is.

We collected data randomly and made prediction about results so its inferential but  not descriptive.

After actual result we described data like who voted whom so its is descriptive analysis but not inferential.

Correct me if am wrong
