Happy Saturday OBA members!

-Bottom line up front. Cheap sugar to feed your bees. Pickup Sunday SW of the Olympia Airport-

Charlie and I were able to acquire a little less than 2 tons of sugar that "fell off a truck".

Okay, that's not true, Charlie is a very good driver and at no point did it fall off.

Brown and Haley (the Almond Roca candy people) had an equipment issue at one of their silos and because it came out of the silo, it was no longer certified for human consumption. Bees aren't concerned about such things. They have generously donated this to our club and we only had to figure out logistics to get it.

Well we have the sugar, the question is what comes next?

The details:
We should have about 70 bags or so allocated to members once we have portioned it out (assuming no packaging surprises).

Price is $5.00 per poly bag but you are always welcome to donate more to the club. (they will be a bit less that 5 gallons around the 35lb range) This will allow us to offset the transportation, packaging and other logistics costs.

Composed of refined beet sugar.

Pickup will be available 230-5pm Sunday 5/16/25. Just southwest of the Olympia airport.

If you cannot make that timeframe I might be able to work with you on a one-off pickup.

Until I have a general idea for the level of interest, I am going to cap it at 5 bags per member on a first email, first serve basis, but feel free to let me know if you are interested in additional bags.

Leftovers will be split between the apiary and upcoming club meeting raffles.

If interested, please reach out to me at mento...@olympiabeekeepers.org with number of bags, if you will be able to pick it up during the window, and I will send you the specifics!  Email will help me keep everything organized vs discussion board messages having to be approved, etc.

Also, if interested in assisting with bagging, you can earn yourself a free bag or two if you come assist with packaging at 230 on Sunday!

P.S. Today you get a free bucket at Coastal with any 50 dollar purchase and it is also a free bucket weekend at harbor freight (lids are 2 dollars) if you are needing somewhere to store your sugar!

Update on current sugar shenanigans status:

We are still sitting on about 40 bags remaining after a productive weekend of packing and pickups.

A more expanded communication will be going out in the next beeline this week, but discussion board will still be the primary source for these communications. As with last time, allocation is on a first email first allocation basis.

Given the somewhat tight turnaround on the initial communication, I will plan on doing another pickup window this weekend 4-5pm Sunday 5/24. If that timeframe doesn't work for you and you are still interested, just shoot me a message at mento...@olympiabeekeepers.org and I will work with you on another option.

The 4mil poly brining bags do handle the weight of the sugar and limit moisture, but I would STRONGLY suggest a 5 gallon bucket for long term storage. During packing 2 were minorly ripped due to sharp objects and had to be re-bagged.

Great, Just email the mentorship account so I can more readily keep track. (discussion board messages have to be approved, so it can result in delay on the allocation.)

Thank you to everyone who picked up sugar today and who will be picking up Sunday. Currently we are fully allocated, but I will let people know if any of the others fall through if you want to be on the waitlist.
