I need to "borrow" a small amount of thymol crystals and lecithin granules to prepare sugar syrup for pre-winter feeding. See Jaross comments below.
I have these items on order, but they won't arrive until September 22.
Anyone out there who can help me out? I will replenish when my order arrives.
Charlie
Note from Michael Jaross:
Introducing Thymol to winter syrup prevents fermentation and makes the syrup a bit more attractive to the bees, so they empty feeders quickly and store syrup in the combs. Fall feeding should be timed with plenty of warm weather remaining so the bees have time to cap syrup, just as they would cap honey. But with PNW weather, that doesn't always happen and uncapped syrup or nectar can eventually ferment, usually when weather begins to warm again in the early spring. A tiny bit of thymol solution added to winter syrup prevents this.
