Attached photos show the smoker tools I use.
The small steel ash can is a 6-gallon Behrens. This seals off the smoker to prevent problems when transporting in a car and gives a safe storage location.
Per advice from others, I started to use Doug fir tree needles that drop under the tree as fuel. This works great and burns a long time. I have an old leaky kiddy-pool under a fir tree that conveniently collects dry needles. I have a lifetime supply.
It was also recommended to put a ball of green grass in the lid of the smoker to cool the smoke and prevent tar build up. This works like a champ.
The fuel lasts a long time, I think the smoke is much cooler on the bees, and tar does not build up. You do have to work the grass up into the lid or it will jam between the lid and the can.
