Hi OBRA racing friends.
I know we are all itching to get back to real racing.  I've seen some creative solutions attempting to fill the Covid void and I'd like to offer up another.  We have created a fun, hard, friendly, informal ride series presented by The PDX Classics, Chasing Lions.

Each month we’ll release a new 20ish mile climby road route in this series called “Chasing Lion Cubs”. Think of these as miniature versions of de Ronde PDX. Ride it whenever you want. Compete for fastest course time and KOM #1 and KOM #2 segments.  Or just ride it at your own chill pace.  Free event.  Public course open to ride any time by yourself or with your safe small pod.  No mass start time.

These courses/stages will always:
  • focus on climbing, navigation and discovery.  A road bike will always be the weapon of choice.  But feel free to ride your gravel bike or whatever - run what ya brung.
  • feature predominately paved roads, while there will likely be some utilitarian or fun unpaved sections included.  But they will always be navigable by skinny tires (and reasonable bike handling skills).
  • reveal some hidden treasures in the Portland area you've not experienced.  It will be a voyage of discovery, not just suffering.  Expect to pass "Dead End" signs and come out the other side smiling.
  • test your navigation skills as well as your fitness.  Load the route on your GPS or phone, know how to use your tech, and bring your navigation "A Game".

We began the series on February 10 with the course named "Thin Track from Temple to Top".  Sorry for the late notice here.  I am extending this stage through March 7 because of the late start and recent snowpocolypse.

This is a great idea, I was wondering when someone would pick up the ill  fated Boucle Des Roses format.

Great job Devin.

UPDATE: Great news for Lion Cub Chasers!

PRIZES!

FREE BEER! oh wait a sec... FREE COFFEE!

Nossa Familia Coffee continues their long-standing tradition of supporting the local cycling community by generously donating prizes for the fastest Lion Cub Chasers.

To give everyone more chances for coffee inspired course shredding, we are extending the deadline for completing the stage by Sunday, March 7 end of day.

THE PRIZES:

  • This month the KOM and QOM of the complete course, as determined by the Strava segment leaderboard will each receive a 6 month, monthly Nossa Familia coffee subscription ($90 retail value).

  • The KOM and QOM of KOM segment #2 will each receive a 3 month, monthly subscription ($45 retail value).

  • And the first ONE HUNDRED finishers on the complete course leaderboard enter the Lion Cub Club and are eligible to receive a $5 Nossa Familia café coupon.

Fine Print:

  • If the same person holds the crown for both the whole course and KOM segment #2, second place on KOM segment #2 will receive the 3 month subscription.
  • Prize for KOM segment 2 only given to riders for efforts while actually attempting to complete the entire course
  • The first 50 women and first 50 men receive $5 café coupons.  If fewer than 50 of either sex complete the course, the remaining balance of the 100 cards will go to the finishers of the other sex.
  • Winners must provide an email address for any of the prizes, which may result in marketing communications from Nossa Familia Coffee.
  • Café coupons will be delivered by email and are only valid at physical Nossa Familia café locations (not valid online).  At present, their Pearl District and Seven Corners locations are open daily.
  • The Lion Cub Club is not really a thing. But you can tell your friends you are the Sergeant at Arms.

March = STAGE TWO - "Leaving Alpenrose"
We are honoring the tremendous legacy of Alpenrose Dairy as an invaluable racing venue and former pillar of the community by launching Stage 2 from the dairy grounds.
Note on the RWGPS route there is a neutral rollout until passing Parr Lumber.

RSVP here for stage 2 and unlock Premium RWGPS features for free.

Current Leaders for Stage 2 complete course and KOM segment 1:

Mielle Blomberg & somehow Devin Bailly (I'm as surprised as you)

We’re gonna keep the leaderboard open through April 4, allowing another weekend of presumptively better weather than we've had lately.  You know March comes in like a LION and goes out like a lamb.

COMING UP
The Big Lions have been hibernating the last two months while we frolicked with their precious little cubs.
But the Kings of the Pride are emerging from the den.  So instead of Chasing Lion Cubs, the next two Rides of the Month will be La Doyenne in April and de Ronde PDX in May.  Yes...in that unconventional order. Trust me. More to come.

What is the protocol on riding through Mt Cavalry? Looking at street view the entrance at Barnes and 57th looks quite uninviting, but that might be an old photo or I'm out of the loop.
