Hi all,

Need some advice. Looking to replace my 172.5 9000 crankset with a 167.5. Since I’m having trouble finding a 9000 version I’m looking at the 9100 series.  Anyone know if the 9100 crankset will work with the 9000 front derailleur and shifter? Apparently, Shimano spaced the inner ring slightly wider on the 9100 crankset to accommodate a wider range of gears to minimize cross chaining. According to Excel Sports, they recommend getting a 9100 FD. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Short answer is yes, it will work. From everything I've read, Shimano says it's not compatible because the spacing is bigger on the 9100, but people have done it and it works great.

Almost anything will work, including different brand cranksets.  It might not work as well as 9100 but it will still work just fine.  Definitely don't need to upgrade the FD IMO.

OTOH, the 9100 FD is definitely better than the 9000 FD, so it's a decent upgrade if you're willing to spring for it.
