Well said Chuck.  OBRA is unique and fantastic, but USAC really is the conduit for racers wanting to push their limits as far as possible.  They are the connection to the rest of the WORLD of bike racing.  They do want racers to have fun and find success on an even playing field.  ron

Hello OBRA Community,

Over the past few years, OBRA and USA Cycling have been fostering a relationship that is a true benefit to OBRA members. In 2019, USAC offered to score all junior results in MTB and CX in their national ranking system. This year, USA Cycling has offered to score two entire OBRA Cyclocross races in its national ranking system. The first one of these is tomorrow, September 24 at Washougal CX. With very few opportunities to score ranking points on the west coast this year, racers with the goal of racing at CX Nationals are having to travel great distances to improve their ranking or accept the reality that they will be starting in one of the back rows. The second race USAC will score is yet to be determined but will be announced as soon as we know. Another piece of exciting news Is that our friends to the north, the WSBA, is hosting their regional championships at the Cyclocross Crusade race on October 16 at Heron Lakes The race will be USAC sanctioned therefore, racers will be able to earn ranking points. To make this work for our non-USAC license holders, the promoters of the Crusade will be covering the cost of the one-day licenses. Before we received this exciting offer from USAC, there were no opportunities for racers to score in the PNW, now there are three.

USA Cycling is the national governing body for our sport. It is a great organization with really good people, trying to fulfill their mission and vision. When I met with USAC’s former CEO at CX Nationals in 2019, I told him that OBRA’s success is tied to the success of USA Cycling, I still hold this to be true. Even if you never intend to race a USAC sanctioned race or compete at a national championship, I encourage you to purchase a USA Cycling Ride Membership. Many of you that do not race purchase an OBRA membership. These memberships support the operations of each organization.

USA Cycling and OBRA are different. Our bylaws allow you to decide how we are governed and implement rules that add a uniqueness to OBRA racing. Because we are small and have less exposure, we are able to keep the costs to race promoters significantly lower than USA Cycling. This is why we have a fairly packed race calendar each year. Although the differences between OBRA and USAC are distinct, we share the same goals of growing the sport and making bike racing accessible to everyone.
