Hello OBRA Friends,

On Monday we lost an amazing person and a long time member of the OBRA Racing Community. Renee Skjersaa was backcountry skiing with her husband Terry and they were caught in an avalanche west of Bend

Renee came in to racing during the heyday of the Cross Crusade Series. She was a member of the super strong Sunnyside Sports Racing Team and recently on the Deschutes Brewery Cycling Team. More often than not, Renee stood at the top of the podium in the 35+ 1/2 races. She was, for lack of a better term, a badass on the bike. For those of you that knew Renee, you would never know it off the bike. Renee was always th first to congratulate everyone else and stay for the whole race to cheer everyone else on. She was also one of the funniest people I know. Renee was a career school teacher and coach. She had an incredibly positive impact on the thousands of Central Oregon students that passed through her orbit. As a friend of Renee's, I can honestly say that I always felt like a better person after spending time with her.

The attached photos are from the Halloween race with Michelle Mercer (former OBRA board member) and with my wife Karen on one of their adventures.

With love to Renee, Terry and their families and friends

This is to all of you who have ever raced in or been a part of the Cross Crusade:

The Cross Crusade is me.  I feel very much in my soul that each and every one of you is a part of me.  I (maybe to a fault sometimes) took each and every one of you very personally.  You all weren't just my customers, you were (and still are) a part of me.

Renee was one of the crazy Sunnyside Sports gang that got on their short bus every weekend and made their way to Portland each weekend from Oct. 1st to the end of November to be a part of the Crusade.  She never seemed like she was there for her own personal gain but instead to support her team and comrades.  And yet, she usually wound up standing somewhere near the top of the podium.  We became good friends then and our friendship only got stronger after I retired from race promoting.  She and Terry were an amazing power couple here in the Bend community.

She is a rare breed.  Like all of you Cross Crusaders are.  I love you all.

Miss you Renee and Terry.   Hope the powder is deep and you alway pick the right single speed gear.

So very sad to hear this news earlier in the week. I do remember seeing her race SS in the earlier yrs when Don Leet/Sunnyside Sports was around. They will both be very much missed in the Bend community. Condolences to both their families.
