I have been working with the Oregon Sports Hall  of Fame and I am happy to announce that they have issued a Presidents Lifetime Achievement award to Phil Sanders for his contribution to the sport of Bicycle Racing for the last 50 years (maybe more).  I had arranged with Tony Kic  to present the award at PIR this Tuesday. However Phil is too frail to attend. Mel and Jay Rathe have graciously agreed to deliver the award to Phil personally.  I ask you to send your comments to Phil.  It would be nice to get any stories if you have time. His email is philips...@frontier.com or Ph...@bbcbike.com

Thank you.

Well deserved! So many of us found our on-ramp to the sport with Phil's program.

Thank you Candi for sharing this wonderful news about Phil. It was Phil that got me to join Beaverton Bicycle Club (BBC) in 1981, soon after I moved to Oregon from CA, where I first started racing with Stockton Bicycle Club. I was very fortunate to have the likes of John Beckman, Tim Rutledge, Paul Robinson, David Auker, Michael Sylvester, Randy Shoquist, and a crazy-fast junior named Darroll Batke to train with. Phil also introduced me to off-season weight training, and to Alpenrose Velodrome, which became my bike racing passion.

Little doubt in my mind that Phil has most likely spent well over 1000 hours per year in coaching, sagging, officiating, and driving junior/senior racers all over Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Think about that. Over 50,000 hrs given to the sport of competitive cycling. Now that's true dedication. Thank you Phil!

That’s wonderful..
I was a member of the BBC in the 70’s. Phil gave me my first track bike to use, Carl Leusenkamp my second. He taught me how to glue on tubulars after my first ever lap at the velodrome ended up with the rear tire rolling off the wheel. - not enough glue! He took me to many races with his son Glenn who was a couple years older. I still remember Phil following us in a car out 185th and upon Germantown and Glenn coaching me on how to climb better. And winter training at the old Beaverton High School doing laps on the track and Phil’s profile in the lights with Chuck Richards and weights in the gym..next to John Beckman. I remember one State Championship when I was an intermediate loosing to Hans Selvog ( who went on to beat Greg Lemond in the Nationals), Phil pointing out that I was younger, but almost caught him and keep going…. I guess I have.. He’s one of kind, very happy for him.

Cheers
Stu

Well deserved Phil! Congratulations on this hard earned recognition!

Phil Sanders was the entry point to track racing for me as well - an out of shape middle aged man emerging from two decades of being taxi dad and homework dad - when I wasn't dedicating long hours and weekends to the extreme job I had at the time. Phil helped me get back in shape and enjoy moving in my body again. Somehow he managed to teach and coach a wide range of ages, skills, and fitness levels, from the tiniest of juniors, to aspiring elites, and of course chubby MAMILs like myself in an astonishingly cost effective manner.

Who else felt a little spike of joy at turning up to the track to see that old VW Van? And who wouldn't benefit from the character building exercise of serving coffee at Bingo night?

Congrats again Phil!

Phil Sanders is a legend.  This is well deserved.

I can't think of a person who's been more influential for me in cycling.  My days in BBC green were the best I've ever had.   I really love this guy.

I don’t think I’ve learned more about cycling than I did from Phil.

I cut my teeth as a mechanic earning my first set of race wheels by overhauling every headset, hub, and bottom bracket in the BBC fleet.

When I was done with that Herculean task, Phil taught me how to build those race wheels, a skill I still use to this day as I prefer to build my own wheels.

He then taught me how to glue sew-up tires to those same wheels. Certainly a valuable thing to know when all the best tires were tubulars.

I’ve raced on and off for the BBC (and Phil) since I was 15. Not sure I could ever do justice to all I have learned from him over the years; certainly not in this humble email.
