I see that membership for 2023 has gone up 10 dollars, to 50 dollars + 2.50 processing. Are any other fees increasing this year? I tried to check the Administrative Rules for the Membership and Event fee schedules but https://www2.obra.org/racers/rules/ still only has the 2022 rules with the old rates.

Hi Brad,

The reason for the membership fee increase is to keep up with increasing costs associated with managing the organization. OBRA communicated the fee increase multiple times in December when we offered the annual membership at the 2022 price. A lot of OBRA members took advantage of the early price discount. The OBRA board made a conscious choice to raise the membership fee instead of increasing the fees charged to race promoters. OBRA provides very low cost liability insurance to race promoters. The result of this is less financial burden to promoters and more races on the OBRA calendar. As a comparison, USA Cycling raised their adult license from $100 to $110 and their junior license from free to $40. If you are a Washington racer, you also pay an additional $35 for the WSBA membership. Although it was a difficult decision to raise the annual adult membership fee, we feel it is still very affordable to most OBRA members. The OBRA junior membership is still free and the U23 membership is $10. For OBRA members that may face difficulty paying the $50 annual membership fee, OBRA can provide financial assistance. The application can be found under the "Resources" menu item on the OBRA website: https://www2.obra.org/obra-financial-assistance-program/.

OBRA staff is currently updating the OBRA racing and administrative rules following the amendments made at the annual meeting. Once all the updates are completed, the 2023 rules will be linked on the OBRA website.

Chuck, thanks for the explanation.   I did renew before the increase, then donated the difference to OBRA.   Plus I totally support the Free Juniors, for which my daughter benefits.     I also find that the OBRA fee is considerably reasonable, and bonus that I don’t have to carry an USCA license.  Yes!
I have carried licenses in other sports, namely Alpine Ski Racing, they charge an arm and a leg.
Thanks OBRA for doing all you do, and at such a budget friendly price.   Including race numbers, history and results website, plus a predominantly one location race entry site, a top quality race trailer with materials for the event promoter’s.

Thanks Chuck. I was mostly looking for somewhere other than a mailing list post that had the fees in writing.

I am curious if we see even more folks taking advantage of the 5 dollar single-race license this year. Not that I'm suggesting we raise that price as well, but with that cost staying the same, the break-even point on a yearly license is now 11 races which I suspect many folks don't do.

Well that's not really true, unless time is free for you.  You'd have to show up earlier, wait in line, get issued a temp number and let the race organizer volunteers get your number into the computer.  Time is not free.  You might also need to pay day-of race fees, which are higher than pre-reg fees and far outweigh the OBRA license fees.

It's very nice to be able to pre-register, and just show up at the line without any hassle!
