Greetings from the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CENTRO) at Hunter College,


We invite you to join us at our Preserving Our Heritage: A Weekend of Community Archiving, November 9-11, at the CENTRO Library and Archive in El Barrio/East Harlem. This series of workshops is geared to teaching community organizations and individuals how to digitize as a means of sharing and preserving our communities' histories. Hear from the experts about the significance of preserving and documenting the historical memory of diasporic and minority communities; then participate in interactive workshops and hands-on digitizing sessions.

Day 1: Thursday, November 9, 2023 | 6:00 - 7:30 PM | ONLINE

Dr. Yomaira Figueroa-Vásquez, CENTRO’s Directora, will be discussing with Joy Bivins, Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the shared responsibilities, challenges, and joy of archiving such rich and unique communities.


Day 2: Friday, November 10, 2023 | 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM | Silberman School of Social Work, 3rd Avenue & East 119th Street , ALSO ONLINE


10:00 AM - 11:15 AM | Archiving our Communities 

Representatives from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Lesbian Herstory Archives, California State University LA, Archivo310, Queens College and CENTRO will explore the challenges, rewards, and lessons learned from collecting and documenting their communities’ histories. 


11:30 AM - 12:45 PM | Copyrights for Archival Materials

Explore the process of donating and accepting treasured materials and the limitations that exist in the acquisition process. Learn from the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts of New York and CENTRO some of the best practices in archival donations and agreements.

3:00 PM - 4:15 PM | Archiving Art

This panel discussion with representatives from the Whitney Museum of American Art, En Foco, El Museo and CENTRO will address issues of metadata and citation in arts archives. Panelists will also discuss ethical approaches to using these treasured resources.

  

Day 3: Saturday, November 11, 2023 | 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM | Silberman School of Social Work |3rd Avenue & East 119th Street

Jump start your personal archive today! Participate in an introductory workshop on preserving your materials. Bring up to five photographs, letters, or papers that you would like help digitizing! CENTRO Archives staff will help you digitize these items to be stored on your own CENTRO flash drive.
