| Join us for EPISODE 6! Wednesday, AUGUST 5 at 3 PM (EST) ![]() This week we will present the famous legend
GOLEM of PRAGUE, with a series of images from our past performances, including new marionettes by Kuba Krejčí and antiques from our collection. Story by Vít Hořejš
Music composed and performed by Frank London with The Golem Band According to the Prague legend, Rabbi Löw created clay humanoid, Golem. After his "robot" valiantly protected the Prague ghetto, the Jews were finally safe from pogroms. But because of various mishaps the Rabbi decided to put his secret weapon to eternal sleep in the attic of the Old New synagogue.Note: In the distant past, we performed "Golem" as a marionette musical, with century-old and contemporary life-size wooden marionettes interacting with puppeteers, dancers and musicians. The show was developed in the early 1990s, in Bytom, Poland, premiered at La MaMa in 1997, then in the Henson International Festival of Puppet Theatre in 1998, and restaged at La MaMa in 2011. Golem Tants from the show, was recorded with Itzhak Perlman and the Klezmatics in 1996 at Radio City Music Hall for Mr. Perlman's CD Live in the Fiddler's House. In 2019, Frank composed a new version which premiered at Summerstage In Central Park. |

He emigrated to the United States in 1979, bringing with him the love for puppetry and one miniscule century-old childhood marionette. In 1990, he found a trove of large antique marionettes at a church attic in the once-upon-a-time Czech and Slovak neighborhood, and co-founded Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre in New York City, a renowned innovative member of the worldwide puppetry community. Vít is a recipient of the Czechoslovak Society for Arts and Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award for promoting Czech and Slovak Puppetry world-wide. The new reality inspired Vít to bring the traditional Czech and Slovak tales to a global virtual audience while socially distanced. He is excited to collaborate with his musician friends in this challenging format. Produced by GOH Productions in cooperation with Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU-NY), CzechMatters and Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association (BBLA), and with public funds from New York State Council on the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and Councilwoman Carlina Rivera. Special Thanks to La Bibliothèque. du Roy. |
