SUMMARY OF DECISIONS, LCSH/LCC EDITORIAL MEETING NUMBER 03 (2023)
March 17, 2023
This Summary of Decisions will be posted on LC’s website and may be accessed at
http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/saco/cpsoed/cpsoeditorial.html.
This month, PTCP received and reviewed 481 proposals for LCSH. We approved 265, or 82 percent. The complete statistical breakdown for the month can be found below.
CLASSIFICATION
DS666.C74
The subject array in the bibliographic record for the work being cataloged needs to be corrected. In LCSH, Creoles are defined as mixed race people in Louisiana. The work being cataloged is about the offspring of Spanish colonizers who were born in the Philippines. A better subject heading would be Spaniards—Philippines. The proposal is not approved.
DT515.45.U28
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Udu (African people).
F1929.B65; F1929.G58; F1929.J3; F1929.J47; F1929.L47; F1929.P48; F1929.S83
The cutters for this number do not need to be established in the schedule. The instruction sheet F 350 says that geographic names are generally not printed in the schedule and do not need to be established. The proposals are not necessary.
F1983.W48
The work being cataloged belongs under the number F1983.A1. The work is not about white people, rather it is about whiteness as an identity. The proposal is not necessary.
GV1197.4
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Mongolian wrestling. Bokh.
LG481.Y65
This proposal is for a technical school. It should be classed at T173. The proposal is not approved.
ND1460.F65
This classification proposal is not approved. See below under Food habits in art.
PN171.P66
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Posthumous literature.
KDZ-KH2 3430
The work being cataloged should be classed in the general works number for environmental law. The proposal is not approved.
SUBJECT HEADINGS
African Americans—Mixed descent
This heading does not cover the specificity of the work being cataloged which is about black Native Americans. The cataloger may resubmit a proposal that covers the work in its entirety.
African clergy; Clergy—Africa
The work being cataloged only requires the headings Clergy—Africa and Clergy—Europe. African clergy is unnecessary per the Subject Headings Manual instruction sheet H 350 and Clergy—Africa does not need to be proposed as it may be subdivided geographically without a formal proposal. The proposals are not necessary.
Amphi (The Greek word)
The proposal lacks English in the citation for the work being cataloged which is required in accordance with the instruction sheet H 202 in the Subject Headings Manual. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Andraitx Harbor (Spain); Torre de Sa Mola d'Andratx (Puerto de Andraitx, Spain); Watchtowers—Spain
The work being cataloged is referring to the populated area of the Andraitx Harbor rather than the harbor itself. There should be secondary sources cited as well. The proposal and the associated proposals may be resubmitted.
Art, Persian-Tajik
The work being cataloged is a comparison of Persian and Tajik art. The headings that should be used are Art, Iranian and Art, Tajik. The proposal is not approved.
Askiya text
Askiya is a type of verbal folk art. The proposal needs more research and an accompanying proposal for the base heading Askiya. The proposal may be resubmitted with more clarification about the art form.
Assisted suicide; Medical assistance in dying
From both proposals, it is unclear what the exact distinction is between the two headings, especially because one of the used for terms in Assisted suicide is MAID (Medical assistance in dying). Contrasting scope notes, fully justified by research, would help clear up this confusion. The proposals may be resubmitted.
Assyrian American artists
The base heading of Assyrian Americans needs to be established as a subject heading along with the creation of the heading Assyrian American artists. The proposal may be resubmitted with the accompanying base heading proposal.
Authors; Dramatists; Novelists; Poets
The proposals contain no justification for the change being made to the geographical subdivision. Most works about these subjects can use the heading of Authors, [regional or national qualifier] for example. The proposals may be resubmitted.
Banks and banking, Kyrgyz
The work being cataloged has the quote “the book discusses banks and banking in Kyrgyzstan” if that is the case, the heading assigned should be Banks and banking—Kyrgyzstan. The heading proposed would only be appropriate for works about Kyrgyz banks or bankers outside of Kyrgyzstan. The proposal is not approved.
Beamforming; Antenna radiation patterns
The proposer does not offer justification to change the heading or any justification for the addition of the related term. The proposals are not approved.
Chuvash (Turkic people)—Mari influences; Mari (European people)—Chuvash influences
The work being cataloged is about the interaction of the two cultures. The proper heading post-coordination would be Chuvash (Turkic people), Mari (European people), and Ethnic relations. The proposals are not approved.
Climate and civilization in art
The cataloger should post-coordinate the terms Climatic changes in art and Civilization in art. The proposal is not approved.
Culo (The Italian word)
The proposal is being withdrawn and added to a project that is addressing the instances of slurs in LCSH.
Ethnic food; Ethnic food industry; Ethnic markets; Ethnic restaurants; Food; Food industry and trade; Restaurants
These headings are being withdrawn and retained for review in the future.
Ethnoculture
The proposal lacks a definition, justification of the used for references, or consultation of additional sources. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Euboea Island (Greece : Region)
Instruction sheet H 760 in the Subject Headings Manual instructions are not to construct regional headings based on islands. The proposal is not approved.
Extinction (Biology) in literature
The work being cataloged appears as if it should be described using the heading Human beings—Extinction rather than just the concept of extinction. The heading is not approved.
Food habits in art
The cataloger should use the heading Food in art which applies to works about dining, cooking and food habits. The proposal is not approved.
Fort Cigogne (Glénan Islands, France)
The proposal lacks English in the citation for the work being cataloged which is required in the instruction sheet H 202 in the Subject Headings Manual. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Gender transition in art
The work being cataloged is a piece of art about gender transition rather than a book about gender transition representation in art. The heading Gender transition should be used along with a genre/form term, Artists’ books. The proposal is not approved.
Indigenous television stations
The work being cataloged should have the heading Indian television stations. The proposal is not necessary.
Judeo-Georgian language
The references for this heading lack citations from sources that are generally consulted when constructing language headings, such as, Ethnologue. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Kyrgyzstan—History—Batken Conflict, 1999
The references for this heading lack citations from general sources that are usually consulted when constructing event headings. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Lapulapu National Monument (Lapulapu, Philippines)
The references for this heading lack citation from general sources that are usually consulted when constructing monument headings. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Lerena family
This heading requires more research. It is unclear whether Lope de Lerena is actually a variant of the family name. The heading may be resubmitted.
Massacre of Azerbaijanis, Azerbaijan, 1918-1920
It appears as if the work being cataloged covers multiple separate massacres of Azerbaijanis between the years of 1918-1920 rather than a single event. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Mestizaje; Mestizos; Multiracial people—Latin America
In accordance with the announcement issued on March 27, 2023, proposals related to the Indigenous peoples of North America must clearly document consultation with the tribal communities affected, to ensure that the name of each group reflects respect for the people, their customs, culture, and languages. Out of an abundance of caution, the Policy, Training, and Cooperative Programs Division is applying the same criteria in evaluating proposals for Indigenous peoples from anywhere in the world. These proposals may be resubmitted.
Millennium celebrations (Year 2000)
Ethiopia follows the Coptic Calendar, so their Millennium celebrations occurred in 2007. A separate heading should be created for this particular event. The proposal change is not approved.
Mongolian wrestling. Bokh
There are multiple errors in this proposal. The cataloger needs to research the heading further to see what the correct form of the heading should be and include more sources in the 670 fields. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Parc de Bercy (Paris, France)
There is no justification for the broader term of Gardens—France and the heading needs more research from other sources. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Piai Island (Indonesia)
There appears to be two islands in the same region that are being conflated according to our research, Pulau Ai and Pulau Piyai. The proposal may be resubmitted with more research.
Post-traumatic stress disorder in art
It is unclear if the work being cataloged is a work of art that covers the topic of post-traumatic stress disorder or a book about post-traumatic stress disorder in art. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Posthumous literature
The proposal lacks additional research about the topic. There is no support for the heading Posthumous literature but rather the term posthumous publishing. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Psychoanalysis in mass media
The work being cataloged is about media psychology which is a field of study that would merit its own subject heading rather than creation of a formulaic subject heading. The proposal is not approved.
Puerto Rico—History—Uprising, 1950
There is an existing heading covering this event: Puerto Rico—History—Nationalist insurrection, 1950. The proposal is not necessary.
Salinas Valley (Nuevo León, Mexico)
According to the Subject Headings Manual H 800 section 8, “if the river is not yet established, establish a heading for the river at the same time.” The proposal may be resubmitted with a proposal for the corresponding river.
Samoan American college teachers
The work being cataloged covers Samoan American faculty in colleges not just college teachers. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Seven Oaks, Battle of, Man., 1816; Metis—Wars
The proposal lacks a work being cataloged to justify the change. LCSH does not use people groups subdivided by Wars as broader terms on wars or battles. The proposal is not approved.
Social work with deafblind people
The work being cataloged does not mention social work. The proposal may be resubmitted with more evidence.
Transgender poets
The heading needs a broader term of Transgender authors. The cataloger may resubmit the proposal with an accompanying proposal for Transgender authors.
Udu (African people)
The proposer needs to consult more resources to justify the term. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Uzbek youth
The work being cataloged is about Uzbek youth in Uzbekistan. The appropriate heading is Youth—Uzbekistan. The proposal is not approved.
GENRE/FORM TERMS
Controversial religious materials
The first four 670 fields of the proposal do not explain why the documents listed are controversial religious materials, for example, noting that they are critiques or dissent to the religions they are written about. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Fictional interviews
The headings of Fiction and Interviews may be post-coordinated. The proposal is not approved.
Lookbooks
The work being cataloged is in conflict with the given definition of the term in the subsequent 670 fields. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Marginalia; Scholia
It is suggested that the proposer use a similar pattern that the Art and Architecture Thesaurus uses for this term. The proposals may be resubmitted.
Practical jokes
The heading that should be used is Comedy sketches. The proposal is not approved.
