Just imagine if OCLC or your local catalog could search on variants as well as the preferred form of a name or subject heading.

Forwarding on behalf of Lisa Gavell (Lisa....@ithaka.org), Ithaka:

Release Notes: Getty Vocabularies in Search on JSTOR

What: You can now search on variant names and terms from Getty’s ULAN and AAT vocabularies on the JSTOR platform.

Where: Searching on jstor.org

What you can do:

ULAN (Union List of Artist Names):

  • For those records that have had ULAN ID’s linked in Forum, users can search for a non-preferred ULAN term (eg “Charles Edouard Jeanneret”) and are able to locate records that have been cataloged with the preferred term (“Le Corbusier”).
  • Notes:
    • This includes the ability to search on multilingual terms.
    • When a user runs a keyword search for a creator’s name, it will match on any of the variants for those records that have been linked to ULAN.

AAT (Art and Architecture Thesaurus):

  • For those records that have had AAT ID’s linked in Forum, users are able to search for a non-preferred AAT term (eg “konkrete art” or “ju ti yi shu”) and are able to locate records that have been cataloged with the preferred term (“concrete art”).
  • Notes:
    • This includes the ability to search on multilingual terms.
    • When a user runs a keyword search, it will match on any of the variants for those records that have been linked to AAT.
