This afternoon's Cataloging Section meeting includes a discussion of "how we are incorporating critical cataloging approaches to promote diversity and inclusion at our workplaces." The RBMS program announced below will focus on the role of controlled vocabularies in critical cataloging.

Announcement: Controlled vocabularies and you: a panel discussion on addressing and redressing terminologies through new and existing vocabularies  – April 29, 2022 2 EST/1 CST/12 MST/ 11 PST / 9 HST

The RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee’s Program Planning Group will be hosting a panel on reparative description and controlled vocabularies and thesauri. In this lightly moderated panel, we will hear from people involved in creating or editing/remediating controlled vocabularies: Michelle J. Cronquist and Staci Ross from the African-American Subject Funnel Project; Lillian Castillo-Speed from the Chicano Thesaurus; Shavonn Matsuda, from Lau Ā Lau Ka ʻIke; and Ryan Hildebrand from the RBMS Controlled Vocabulary Editorial Group’s Prejudicial Materials Group.

Speakers will discuss their projects, how these vocabularies or thesauri can be used – especially to redress pejorative or harmful terminology – and their process is for including and choosing among terms. We are soliciting questions for the panelists in advance
