Friday, November 17, 2023 from 12:00pm-1:15pm ET Virtual on Zoom About the talkStock photographs of apparently wild animals in apparently wild settings are frequently used for calendars, websites, and fundraising appeals—including by environmental and animal advocacy organizations. Unbeknownst to most, these photographs are frequently of captive wildlife held by unaccredited—and often unlicensed—exhibitors with well-documented records of animal abuse and neglect—a practice Professor Winders has termed “canned photography.” Despite myriad violations of federal and state laws, these lawless animal suppliers continue to operate profitably. This talk will expose the rampant practice of canned photography, detail the legal violations of the key players involved, summarize the legal regime that has failed to meaningfully address chronic violations, and propose reforms.
About the speaker Delcianna (Delci) Winders is an associate professor of law and the founding director of Vermont Law and Graduate School’s Animal Law and Policy Institute, which trains future animal advocacy leaders. Prior to joining the VLGS faculty, Winders was on the faculty of Lewis & Clark Law School, where she established and directed the world’s first law school clinic dedicated to farmed animal advocacy. She previously served as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at the PETA Foundation and the first Academic Fellow of the Harvard Animal Law & Policy Program. Winders has also taught animal law at five other law schools. Her scholarship focuses on the intersection of administrative and animal law. |
