Hi all,
This week, I’m excited to introduce six new members to our group:
- Brooks Blakely (Holgate)
- Greg Waidelich (Pettisville)
- Sarah Lumbrezer (Fayette)
- Britt Gerken (Defiance Middle School)
- Julie Houck (Defiance Elementary)
- Larry Freshour (Stryker Elementary)
A quick note: I use the terms STEAM and STEM interchangeably, as schools and teachers may use different names for similar programs. The important thing is that we’re fostering a culture of learning by doing, problem-solving, and preparing our students for the workforce.
Some of you have been teaching STEM/STEAM for a while, and some are brand new to the program. I’m working to get this group more active, as I’ve collaborated with many of you over the years, and now I’m mentoring new STEM teachers as districts either launch new programs or transition with staff changes.
This group is here for you—ask questions, interact, and share with other STEM teachers. I’d also love to organize a gathering where we can share and learn from one another. If anyone is interested in helping schedule an event, let me know! Eric West (NBEC Instructional Coach) has successfully done something similar for art teachers, who meet once a year in February to exchange ideas.
One final note: If you’re in Defiance, Fulton, Williams, or Henry counties, your districts are invited to join the Advanced Manufacturing Consortium (AMC). Membership is free for K-12 districts and comes with many benefits, including participating in discussions around workforce development and STEAM in our region. You can access the membership form here:
AMC Membership InformationThe AMC has received several large grants to bring regional stakeholders together, and STEAM education is a major focus. The AMC’s members include many of the area’s largest employers. We’re currently piloting the Advanced Manufacturing Career Tree curriculum, with Greg Waidelich (new member this week) leading the way.
Thanks,
John
