Hello STEAM Coalition members!

I have been hearing from a few of you about what is happening in your district with plans for updates to STEAM and STEM programs. Here are a few that I am aware of from the past few months.

I was at Hicksville yesterday and saw the new facility that we are calling Makerspace 3.0
Nathan Ferrell has moved his operation out of the main building and is housed in the bus garage. Nathan is developing a program which includes a class for seniors which includes work placement. The space itself is being built up by the students, who have constructed benches, cabinets and other furniture using donated and scrap materials. New equipment includes a laser cutter / engraver which I saw in action yesterday.

Dawn Ash is new to our group and comes to us from Lake Schools in Wood County. She is getting ready to start a makerspace in the library at Lake High School. I shared one of my presentations with her showing some of what had been done in the area in past few years.

Defiance Middle School has a new STEM class this year that is being taught by Britt Gerken.

Those are just a few of what I am sure is a big resurgence of STEAM opportunities in our area.

Please respond with what you are doing that is of interest to other members. We are hoping to bring back the STEAM Tours of different districts who are doing something worthwhile with STEAM and are willing to open their doors for visitors.

Ready For Hire is a STEM after-school program through Mid-Ohio ESC for Richland, Morrow and Crawford Counties.  The first session starts October 19th.  We are currently enrolling students.

We are using 3D printers, Drones, Coding and a VR training facility using Transfr VR https://transfrinc.com/ to promote careers in STEM.

Students will earn a free drone or robot for completing one 8-week session, and be entered into a drawing for a choice of a 3D printer, iPad, or an Oculus.  Attached is a student flyer and a staff flyer with more information on our program.  This is open to high school students in Richland, Morrow and Crawford Counties.  Please feel free to share with staff or students!  We are also still hiring staff to work the after-school and summer programming.

Quick STEM Update from Archbold Middle School,

We are continuing to "build the plane as we fly it" with the AMS STEM program.  Last year was my first year at AMS and we started STEM as an optional elective for 7th & 8th graders for a 2-day-a-week semester course.  This year it is a required elective for 1 quarter in 7th and 8th grade.

The positive is I also teach Computer/Technology to 5th & 6th graders so I'm slowly building the technology/computer science/STEM program and it will all integrate/flow nicely... it is just taking time to build, tweak and plan. :)

Highlights of 7th & 8th grade STEM so far this year:
  • Coding in Scratch (touched on other languages)
  • Built Websites on Google Sites
  • Teamwork focusing on the engineering process & building different projects (legos, egg drops with constraints, robot prototypes, etc)
  • Snap Circuits and conductivity with Makey-Makey's
  • We designed it in Tinkercad and just opened a few new 3D printers we hope to have up and running soon.
  • Finally, we have a class set of Finch Robots that the kids are block coding.  They have done fun projects like jousting, drawing shapes, and adding lights/music to their robots.
I'm happy to share ideas, pictures, or digital resources so if anything above sounds interesting or helpful please let me know.  I would love to make my way around other STEM classes later this year to gather more ideas for my program too!

Thanks,
Allison Bentley

Hi all,
At Swanton Middle School we have a few different things going on. I teach grades 5-8 computer/technology classes quarterly and integrate STEM concepts into my classes. We now offer quarterly electives as the last class of the day. Students choose which electives interest them and they sign up accordingly. I applied for and received the Amazon Future Engineers grant through Project Stem and am using it to teach  Intro to Coding and Coding Game design. I also teach Build it 1 & 2 where we do building/stem challenges and exploratory activities. We use legos, k'nex, spheros, ozobots, makey-makey's, 3D pens & building challenges.
One of our math teachers offered robotics as an elective this past quarter, using Lego Spike Prime Robots, and it went really well. We are hoping to add another robotics elective and several other STEM driven electives this year.
Thanks,

Mrs. Julie LaPoint

Hello Everyone!  As John mentioned, I am new to stem/steam.  My co-worker (Dory Boggs) and I are in the process of getting a steam lab up and running in the Lake Student Success Center.  Our space is currently bare.  However, we plan to change that this year! We recently applied for two Battelle OSLN grants to get our first two projects in motion (coding with Sphero Bolts and Makey Makey boards and Lego Robotics). Our goal is to create a K-12 space for students to expand and cultivate their critical thinking skills. As we grow, we also plan to have steam projects that teachers can take to their classrooms, as well.  In addition, we are having a district wide Lego drive in November.  Fingers crossed we get our grants!  We would truly appreciate any and all the advice you can provide to us!  We are looking forward to touring any steam labs/makerspaces that we can!  Sincerely, Dawn Ash and Dory Boggs

This is all good information. Please keep chiming in with any information about your district and what you have been doing. Please dont assume that we know what others are doing because it has been over two years since we did any makerspace visits and a lot has changed.
