Hi,

I had cause to run NVDA today, and went into Chrome and pressed Control H to go into History.

It was as if the history list wasn’t there, NVDA’s virtual buffer simply wasn’t seeing any of the entries.

I loaded JAWS back up again, and it was all there.

Why is NVDA not rendering that history list correctly?

Thanks.

All the best

I don't know why the list isn't being seen.  It is on my machine using the latest Chrome and the latest production release of NVDA.  Did you try rebooting?

The history window has been inaccessible by NVDA for some time now in
Brave browser as well. The downloads window (ctrl+J) is not accessible
neither.

Yep I second the fact of seeing the history and downloads list. I am
unable to reproduce as well. have you checked for  updates regarding
your entire daily software suite  you use? Also, have you tested with
other browsers and other screen readers?

Using NVDA 2025.3.2 on Windows 11, both History and download list are working here with Chrome.

Using the same version here, 25.3.2, and the history list doesn’t display.

Are you on Windows 10 or 11? I’m on 11.

All the best

I can read the history list fine in chrome.  it loads as expected and I
can up and down arrow in focus view.

Version 143.0.7499.193 (Official Build) (64-bit)

although that is about to change in a few minutes, there apparently is a
new update out.

Yeah, so it could be the 32-bit doesn't do it.
I'll have to grab and test the 64-bit version.

It does with JAWS though and Narrator.

I can't remember but have you reinstalled chrome? I am now updated to Version 144.0.7559.60 (Official Build) (64-bit) and can see all history windows. also have you run reboots of your computer etc etc etc?

Gene Asner

Also, have you tried running NVDA with all add-ons disabled to see if
that solves the problem? If it doesn't, have you tried creating a
portable version of NVDA to see if that solves the problem? If the
problem isn't related to add-ons and trying a portable copy solves it,
then a reinstallation of NVDA is in order, since you tried the registry
fix. You can create a portable copy and have the creation process save
the current configuration, then create an installed copy and not lose
any settings nor add-ons and you won't lose the speech dictionary either.

But first, create a portable copy and use the default of not saving the
current configuration so the copy you are testing is completely clean.

No, Sarah, I just sat here twiddling my thumbs.

Of course I have done all that. I am an IT consultant after all. <Smile>.

No, NVDA just doesn’t want to load that history list into its virtual buffer for me.

I have the same version of Chrome as you, same NVDA, I have uninstalled and reinstalled both, I have run the Registry Fix tool, Nada.

Long Live Narrator!

All the best

Yep, done all that now. Portable Copy and Disabled Addons.
Not happening.
I get the top of the page, but none of the checkboxes or links to the pages.
I don't really care, as NVDA is not my primary screen reader, but I just thought I'd report it.
Works though with JAWS and Narrator.
All the best

We now know this is a problem with your system and not with NVDA, which
is what the tests were supposed to determine.

I still think it is a corruption in your system. Have you repaired windows just to be double sure? I'm not an IT anything, just someone who is used to troubleshooting thanks to their job.

Happy friday.

No we don't. I just have people tell me it works for them, I haven't seen it verified.

I have. My job is in IT. So my computers are regularly maintained. I have tried it now on two computers with the same result.

We do have verification. I suppose verification is going to someone's
house and seeing if they see what they say they see? People aren't
wrong if they say they see these things. And if you apply whatever
rules of verification you apply to others regarding your problem, we
don't have verification that you have the problem you say you have. We
haven't seen your computer and tested it.

Since no one else has complained about the problem you are asking the
list about, and since many people, five, six, perhaps more, have said
they see what you are asking about, that, along with trying a clean, no
add-ons copy of NVDA shows that the problem is with your system.

I haven't been following this entire thread, so I apologize if I am repeating something or if there is a misunderstanding, but I wanted to share my finding regarding the Chrome History list ().

In my experience, if you are in Browse Mode, the list of history items often does not appear in the virtual buffer. NVDA will read the tabs and land the focus on the search edit box, but the list itself seems empty.

To read the history entries, you need to switch to Focus Mode () and then use the Tab key to reach the list. Once your focus is actually inside the list, you can use the Down Arrow to navigate and read through the items successfully.

It seems the issue isn't that NVDA can't read the list, but rather that the list items aren't being rendered into the Browse Mode buffer automatically. I hope this helps clarify things for those who were having trouble seeing the entries.

:Perhaps that is the problem but NVDA automatically goes into focus mode
when I move to the list and if I shift tab, it goes back into browse mode.

However, that is something to check, which mode you are in if you can't
move through results properly.

Agreed because you have set it that way perhaps in your Chrome configuration profile. I really do not have the need to know my Chrome browse history, just trying to help with my experience with it

No, I have set nothing that affects this. Indeed, I even have automatic
switching turned off and it still changes as necessary. The behavior of
not switching when it should in Chrome history may be caused by an
add-on and if odd behavior occurs, if you want to change it, running
NVDA with add-ons disabled is one of the first trouble shooting things
to try, unless of course, you aren't using any.

Hi,Y
Es, this is exactly right.
Thank you so much.
JAWS will put everything into the virtual buffer, NVDA won't. That's the difference.
Now I know I can read it in focus mode, that's OK. Not perfect, because you can't search the whole page, only the current screen.
The other down side with NVDA, is that each history entry has a checkbox associated with it, so you can't simply press x to jump to each item.
Thanks so much.

That's really a proper way to discuss something. Call something rubbish
with no explanation of what you disagree with or why. I see no reason
to respond further unless you present rational and civil arguments.

In focus mode, when you are on the list and not on a check box, up and
down arrow moves you directly from one item to another.
Also, you can move through the entire list. You don't stop at the end
of the screen. I just tried down arrowing perhaps fifty times and I
continued to move. then, there is the search you land on as well.

I said I wouldn't discuss whether your problem is a system problem or a
general problem further, but I'm discussing using history if it helps
you and others following the thread.
