On the What's New In NVDA page

it says,

When the Windows Sticky Keys function is enabled, the NVDA modifier
key will now behave like other modifier keys. This allows you to use
the NVDA modifier key without needing to hold it down while you press
other keys.

Btw, to turn on Sticky Keys, press Shift 5 times.

PS: Forgot to say this feature was introduced in NVDA 2012.3.

Hi, thanks for your help, but it's not what I need. I don't want to make the insert key sticky; I want it to work correctly on my keyboard in Jaws.

This is a simple global plugin to emulate sticky NVDA key.

1. Download the file at

   and save it to globalPlugins directory as lockcapslock.py (i used .txt extension because we have python module on our webserver)
2. reload plugins or restart NVDA
3. press and release ctrl+alt+space to lock the NVDA key
4. Press the same combination to unlock the NVDA key,
   It is also possible to unlock by pressing the same NVDA key as was emulated by the plugin. Plugin emulates the first active (enabled in keyboard configuration) variant of NVDA key and the variants are tested in the following order: capslock, extended insert, numpad insert.
   It is possible to combine this with windows sticky keys and it also works for those who uses reviewing in console windows.

Do you mean Jaws or NVDA?  

For NVDA, you can press the modifier key twice to perform its original function - eg if you have caps lock set as your NVDA modifier key, press it twice to toggle caps lock.

Trying to think what else you could be asking - If you mean you would like to use the number pad for navigation (4 for left arrow etc), then look in the add-on store for the Numpad Navmode add-on.

Could the JAWS feature called "Insert Key Mode" be simulated or created in NVDA?

The description is this:

If checked, the INSERT key will act as a sticky key. By default, this option is checked. By default, this box is not
is verified.

Has some Logitech genius thought of one of their keyboards to configure the insert extended keys without continuous or repeated pressing, with the annoyance
This means that they cannot be used as modified reader keys.

In JAWS this is solved by activating that option.

In NVDA I have not seen anything similar, and therefore it is very uncomfortable to use the numeric keypad insert as a modified key.

I don't know, maybe with some small addon, you could add that option to NVDA.

It looks like Jaws and NVDA have taken very slightly different approaches to the same issue - though neither I suspect, considering your specific issue.

Where Jaws has an option you can enable to make their modifier key "sticky" - NVDA doesn't have an option, but instead automatically makes the NVDA key sticky if the Windows accessibility option Sticky Keys is enabled - which is probably 95% of the time when you would want that.

I'm not 100% clear on what is happening with your keyboard, but I suspect a fix for that is probably more likely than to NVDA - The first two things I would do are 1) Check the Logitech driver or utilities to see if there is a way there of changing the behaviour.  And 2) Write to Logitech to explain the problem to them (they should ideally know what a screen reader is, but even you can just convey that you have a program for which INSERT is a modifier key and is pressed in combination with other keys, that should explain the functionality which is conflicting).

If someone would like to make an add-on, it probably isn't overly complex  - someone could likely look at what NVDA does when Windows sticky keys is enabled and copy that into an add-on - I say without actually looking at the code :)
