Hello

I'm very new with NVDA, read the help file, made notes of the basic shortcuts and want to start with NVDA.
I work with a laptop, so first things first, the setting "laptop" is enabled.
I go to a site and want to read the complete article. The steps below are the things I do:
  1. website opened
  2. NVDA is started with ctrl alt N
  3. Dialog screen is closed
  4. ctrl space
  5. h to go to any heading
  6. ins A ==> NVDA says: ins A and tells nothing more
  7. ins arrow down ==> NVDA says: ins arrow down and nothing more
What am I doing wrong? Did I forgot something in the preferences? Did I missed a step? With Narrator (and its shortcuts) I have no problem but I prefer to work with NVDA. Browser app (Chrome or Edge) does not make any difference.

Hi Jesse,
I am not sure how your settings are configured and which synthesizer you are using.
Perhaps, a better option would be to start off with a portable copy that is configured with the appropriate settings.

I previously used Microsoft OneCore voices when the read issues happened.
I now switched to "Synthesizer EG Speak" and the shortcuts work. *surprised* What has a voice to do with working commands??

We can say now: simply switch to the synthesizer eg speak. Problem solved.
But what now with my source language Dutch? The speak out in dutch was perfectly with the corrupt Microsoft onecore voices. Now I'm working with almost not understanding the speak out of a kind of robo voice.

Do you have here any advice for Dutch and easily understanding speak out? *laud laugh*
Now I do have to extremely focus to understand something of the speak out. A normal dutch voice or a more normal voice would be helpful. Maybe you can still have more suggestions and already a big thanks to make the shortcuts working!!

Control space doesn't do anything in terms of web navigation. I don't
know why you see what you see, but you can skip that command.

Also, are you running NVDA after you go to the web page? You list that
as number 2. If so, run NVDA before you even open the browser. You may
be causing problems by running NVDA after the browser is opened.

Doesn't matter if NVDA was started first or not...

Anno 2026 and AI, seems a very lot to do about inclusion and visual impaired...

Switching to other synthesizer (Espeak) was a help to make the command for reading working. *crazy* What does a voice has to do with doing commands/shortcuts??
