BookMark Inquiry

Good afternoon to all.

 

I am working on a program with the DHS. In this program, I am required to use a bookmark called ANDI. It was developed by the Social Security Administration to aid in evaluating websites for accessibility flaws and compliance.

 

Earlier, I tried to use it with NVDA, but it was very difficult to navigate with.

 

Does anyone have any direct experience in using bookmarks with NVDA? Thanks.

Hi Jerry,

 

Thanks for your message. Just to clarify, when you mention using a "bookmark" called ANDI, are you referring to a browser bookmarklet (a JavaScript bookmark), or is it actually a browser extension/add-on? Knowing how you are loading it might help the community provide better guidance on using it with NVDA.

From the little research I undertook before thinking about a reply, Andi is a bookmarklet. It calls itself a bookmark on the site, although as it still references internet explorer quite a lot I'm not convinced as to its modernity. 

I think then the  question for Jerry becomes is it accessing Andi to check a specific site, or interpreting Andi's results you're having issues with. 

If the former, which browser you're using would be a necessary datum to help further please. :)

Hi,

ANDI is actively being maintained and used. It is part of the Trusted Tester program that DHS developed to standardize accessibility testing in US Government agencies.

Once loaded there is a documentation button. Generally, it provides a set of menu like items near the top of the page and a way to highlight  pieces of the page like headings, form fields and regions. It will then present the information a screen reader (NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver) should be using to describe that element’s role, state and name.

It works as a javascript bookmarklet in other words, a piece of code that can be added to a bookmark in any browser. It will then go to GITHUB to retrieve the most recent code and use that as a one time scan of the current page. If the Page is dynamic, then ANDI would have to be re-activated after each change that occurs on the site. For a screen reader user, ANDI is not very useful unless you want an idea why your sighted friend says a link is a button or you want to know if everybody see the press here to activate a live chat string, that is associated with a button. A NVDA user can use insert +F7 and get the same navigation as what ANDI provides, though they won’t get a breakdown like the name for this button is coming from an aria-labeled by attribute. 

For a NVDA user, I suggest using NVDA navigation and then bring up the inspect element and perhaps switching to the accessibility tree in the browsers web tools to get this type of information for everyday use. However, if you are attempting to get a trusted 508 tester certificate, you will need to know how to use ANDI.

I am not sure as to what type of bookmark it is. I believe it is a java script, but don't hold me to that. Regarding accessing it, when google chrome is open, I press the alt f key, go down the list to bookmarks, right arrow, then press the letter a until Andi opens. Hope this information helps. Thanks.

The certification is why I was curious about the useability of it with NVDA. On the section where you choose the different options i.e. focusable elements, graphics/images, links, etc., I could not open it to make any choices. But even with JAWS, it was hit and miss whether it would open or not. And if anyone out there has any way to contact the developers, please let me know; because even though this program is supposed to help determine accessibility concerns, it is not very compliant in some places. I could continue on my rant, but I will stop here. Thanks.
