Dear NVDA users,

I'm writing to seek guidance on how to mask my contact details on the NVDA Certification website. While I understand the practical reasons for listing contact information, I'm concerned about the potential GDPR implications and unwanted solicitations.

Recently, I received an unsolicited message on WhatsApp from someone in India, asking personal questions about my employment and salary. They mentioned that they found my contact information on the NVDA Certification website. This experience has made me uncomfortable, and I'd like to explore options for protecting my personal data.

Could you please provide guidance on how to modify my account settings to mask my contact details on the certification page? I want to ensure that I don't miss out on any work opportunities while also safeguarding my personal information.

I'd appreciate any assistance or advice on this matter. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Sincerely,

Hi Mujtaba,

The whole reason for having the ability to add contact details is so people can contact you.  I think we need to make it a bit clearer what people can contact you FOR, but that's why we added the ability in the first place.  If you go to https://certification.nvaccess.org/ you can go back to the exam page and there it will list the contact details that you have shared and you can change or remove any as you prefer.

Kind regards

Quentin

Absolutely this. If you don’t want your details listed, don’t pay for the certification. You can still take the exam and tell people about your score.

There are numerous call forwarding companies that will give you a number for people to telephone to keep yours private. You can very cheaply buy a domain and get either a whole new mailbox or an email forwarder.  I’ll be honest, I want the recognition and potentially any work that comes my way or I wouldn’t have sat the exam in the first place!

Sean.

To be clear - purchasing certification and having your details publicly listed are two separate things!

Many people who sit the exam don't have any details listed (just a name and when they completed it).  You ONLY include details IF YOU WANT PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO CONTACT YOU.  I don't think I can be clearer about that, it does clearly state: " Any details you provide here will be made publically available".  (Yes, we even misspelt it so you'd notice.... I just noticed 🤣).

Please go to https://certification.nvaccess.org/ and to the certification link and edit your details as you desire (whether to show or hide them).

Kind regards

Quentin

Dear Quentin  and NVDA users,

Thank you for your guidance. I was able to go to the certification site as instructed and update my details.

For now, I have removed my number from that page. One should only see my mail ID. I was a bit freaked out when I got that message and admit it was just paranoia. Having said that, if some random person could search and reach out; I can imagine how other well intended strangers would love such an opportunity.

Now they can only send me phishing mails and not track my location or get to know my number. By the way, if anyone has user testing work for their websites OR applications, kindly oblige by mailing: Terrima...@icloud.com

Thank you for your support. Have a good one!

Sincerely,

Mujtaba,

I'm glad you got your details updated! I can confirm that looking at your entry in the certification list only shows your email and website.

Hopefully some business comes your way.  All the best!

Quentin
