While I have no experience with whatsapp in the desktop environment, you might do better to use the flattened review navigation commands - by default, on a full desktop layout keyboard, NVDA+numpad 9 and NVDA+numpad 3?
I use this quite often to sort of review dialogue contents quickly/easily, and it still allows you to then interact with controls/elements?

NVDA reads this fine for me. I press at in a chat and I can cursor up or down, or start typing to filter. I seem to have to press tab to complete, typing and space doesn’t resolve the person.
I’m using WhatsApp for Windows Version 2.2526.2.0, NVDA 2025.1.
Sean.

Yes it does – I didn’t want to try it on the group I was in yesterday for fear of sending a partial message!
But have just given it a go and confirmed it puts the user’s name in and a space afterward with both enter or tab. Wonderful.
