Using windows 11, NVDA and outlook 2021. Sometimes while reading a message, NVDA is slow to respond and I have to hit control alt n to reload NVDA I don’t hear the exit NVDA sound just the reload. I am using the extended outlook ad-on and the latest version of NVDA anyone else notice this? thanks

What do you mean slow? Are you saying it takes awhile or it stops
responding? If you don't hear the quit sound, that suggests the program
has crashed and the control alt n command is forcing the program to
close and restart. If the program is frozen, the command forces a shut
down.

As to what is causing the problem, I have no idea. Someone might have
to look at logs to try to find out. You could try using Outlook without
the add-on to see if that stops the problem.

I am using outlook 2016 and current version of nvda and windows 10 pro on this pc.

Outlook works fine.

Some emails from places like amazon and other retail websites, are super slow.
I think it may have something to do with all the graphics in the message.

Oh yes, it reallydrags.

I think the NVDA is frozen and I like you don't know what the problem it. It might be the graphics I will keep track and see what happens. Also when I am listening to a document in note pad, on the last line it will not speak the whole line until I up and down arrow thanks gene

Yep, I don’t like NVDA with Outlook classic at all. It’s not a nice experience. Try it with Narrator and you’ll see what I mean.

NVDA reads out Section 1, Column 1, etc, before it starts reading the body of the message. Narrator gets straight on with it.

NVDA is doing what JAWS used to do back in the 90s or something.

If you have virtual mode come on automatically, then NVDA should just read the body of the message.

However, all that said, Classic is going away soon, so it’s probably not worth NVDA contributors working on it.

All the best

I've used NVDA and Classic Outlook (if I understand what you mean) for years with no problems.
If you want to experience something on the deep end of not nice, try any screen reader with the new Outlook! Now, I edit email messages in Word and paste in the contents. The calendar is not even worth trying. I've switched to Google Calendar.

Classic is supported until 2029, hardly soon.

In my  previous message, I said I sometimes, as in rarely, I find some messages from retailers like amazon very slow in my outlook 2016.

At a roughestimate, I will say that is about 1 or 2 messages in over 3000.

I doubt it would get better with anything else.

The only time n v d a say reads message colums is in the message list.

I hear this only when I want the details.

Otherwise I send sender, then subject.

No thans steve,  I will keep using m s office classic  even after 2029.

Just because m s will stop support for outlook classicin 2029, that does not mean it stops working.

In point as I wrote at thop of message I am still using outlook 2016.

Have a good day.

It still reads things like whether the Email is HTML or text, and always says Section 1, Document 1, as if it is a word document. It’s inefficient. Try Narrator, it simply reads the body of the message as soon as you hit enter, as does JAWS.

Nvda said nothing about documents, columns, text, html,  etc.

Nvda simply read your message in my ms office 2026 office program.

That’s it. Only the message.

Point is, I don’t have to press read to end with either JAWS or Narrator. I simply press enter, and they start reading the body of the message, none of that Section 1, and telling me that the message is text or HTML, and repeating the subject line like NVDA does. It’s just clunky.

When Outlook is open Create Configuration for Outlook, Open NVDA Menu, press C for Configurations, new and name the configuration, use this configuration for current i.e. Outlook

Then, NVDA Menu/ Settings/ Browse

Check: Automatic Say All on page load

Uncheck: Include layout tables

Hope this helps improve your experience.

That is micromanagement and a concern with fractions of a second.  Is
between one quarter and one half second per message worth worrying
about?  If you tie a shoe, do you analyze every movement to make sure
you aren't wasting fractions of a second? And you are just plain wrong
when it comes to Thunderbird.  JAWS announces the subject line every
time you open and start listening to the message body.  It shows that
subject line as the first line of the message when it isn't there at
all.  If you move down the message list, and decide to listen to a
message, you hear the subject first in the list, then again when you
open the message. Talk about inefficiency and really annoying
redundance.  And there is no good way to get around this.  Using read to
end does nothing because JAWS treats the subject line as part of the
message and reads it anyway.  Down arrowing once or twice and issuing
read to end after that is cumbersome for every message and it often
doesn't work anyway, for some reason, you aren't where you expect to be.

And as far as time is concerned, it may actually be faster to use read
to end after you open a message.  Reading may start sooner if you do
that than if you just wait.  Even if NVDA didn't repeat things if you
don't use read to end, if it just started reading the message body in
Thunderbird, it might start reading faster if you issue the command.  So
you can't say using read to end is less efficient from a time standpoint
because you don't know.

No screen-reader does everything ideally.  You can either use an easy,
simple, and efficient method to get around this if one exists, or you
can blow the behavior out of proportion.

If you execute read to end in an email program when you open a message,
it becomes second nature and you don't even think about it.

You have made this same complaint before and I have discussed it.  I
won't discuss it again to avoid repeating myself.

Gene,
I have used Jaws as my primary screen reader for about 10 years and I do not experience Jaws reading the subject line after I open a message.
I also do not have it read the entire message automatically, so I hit enter on a message, then press insert+down arrow for read-to-end and it works flawlessly.
ON my Windows 11 system, and my Windows 10 system before that, NVDA has never voiced if a message is unread, replied to, or forwarded and I have done all the trouble shooting that Quentin and others have recommended, otherwise, I might consider switching to NVDA full time, rather than as a backup. I do give a monthly donation to NvAccess because I use it for some things and when Jaws ties itself in a knot, it sometimes can get it untied.
I also use Narrator on occasion.
But Jaws does more things consistently well for me.
I'm just glad there are at least 3 good choices for screen readers so folks can find what they prefer.

You don't say what email program you are using. I said that that is the
JAWS behavior with Thunderbird. I suspect you are using a different
program.

Sorry, I did not notice you were talking about Thunderbird, I'm using Outlook classic with the m365 subscription.

this is a battle we fight every time. It is just quicker to  hit control and then read to end. I'm really not sure what the issue is. and sometimes hearing that info can be useful such as when you are troubleshooting why an email is reading in a way that might not be suitable for your needs.

Well instead of preventing it, just press enter and listen to the result. It’s ugly.

All the best

Yes, it is. It's called efficiency, or the lack of it, in this case.

Richard, you don't need to do the read to end thing with JAWS, it will simply read the body of the message only as soon as you hit enter. That is my point.
Narrator also behaves like this, it's only NVDA that is a bit 'orrible in that regard.

All the best

You do not need the subject line and all that crap read out again, when you press enter. It’s just inefficient.
