I have tried to donate for more than the past year and can't get it
done.  Would like to set up an on-going monthly contribution but would
like to do it as an individual; not under the control of Paypal or any
other large corporation.  The process of donating is just too
complicated for me to handle.

Subject: Re: [NVDA] Donations Page

I just looked at the donation page and it has real problems. Here is what it said after I selected an amount by pressing a button.
Donation For NVDA
Amount not shown redacted by me.
Enter amount
A$
AUD

I've already selected an amount by pressing a button. Then, there is the section I reproduced that I see after pressing the button telling me to enter an amount. I already did so what's the point?
It says clickable on the enter amount but you only hear it when you up arrow after passing the field, not when you down arrow.

I see no combo box to select the originating currency. In short, I found the page completely not usable because it is so unclear as to what you do and why.

Hi David,

Thanks for the feedback. Thank you also for trying to donate, and
sorry the experience was so frustrating. The download page (on our
site) has donation amounts in Australian dollars. Once you choose an
amount, it sends you to PayPal to complete the payment. I gather the
experience varies between countries and I believe that error you got
was entirely from PayPal's side, but I will see if we can look into it from here.

Kind regards

The short experience is that after 4 attempts I have now given up, as on

I cannot understand why the donation page remains so complicated. It
should
be the easiest page on a web site to receive payments from, rather than
imposing a requirement to interact with multiple drop-down boxes to
select
sender currency and recipient currency etc. I don't need to see what my
donation converts to, I just want to make the payment. This whole
conversion
requirement we have to go through seems geeky.
PayPal knows I am paying in British pounds, why not just receive it
with
the automatic PayPal conversion rather than making us go through all
these
hoops?
I don't get these problems with other international transfers.

. Every time I try to process the payment up.

Hi Howard,

Firstly thank you for your support (both actual, and intended).  We use PayPal because it generally gives a fairly cheap conversion rate for accepting donations from around the world.  It is possible to donate via PayPal NOT using an account if you have a credit card, although possibly only a one off donation.

The other way of donating is via direct bank transfer.  This is a great way of donating from within Australia (where our bank is) as it is usually free to transfer between banks here.  But, unless the amount is quite large, the fees for transferring money internationally are often quite significant, so we don't tend to promote it as much.  Our EFT details are on our donation page at: https://www.nvaccess.org/support-us/#bank

Kind regards

Quentin

Hello. I have always contributed some amount to the NVDA Project because, as a full-time user of this screen reader, I recognize the importance of the project for blind people all over the world. However, I have also always thought that NVDA should indeed make donations easier, especially for users who are not native English speakers. For example, any donation button should lead directly to the PayPal website in the language in which NVDA is being run. I believe that a simple measure like this, which is very easy to implement, would greatly help increase donations. After all, it is enough to add/change just a few letters in the URL used to open the PayPal website for the magic to happen and for the PayPal website to open in the language in which NVDA is being run... Thank you.

We are looking at what we can do to make the experience easier for users.  Hopefully we can bring you some positive changes!

Kind regards

Quentin
