Hi all,

Braille Essentials 26.05.1 (emergency stable release) is now available from NV Access add-on store. This version resolves the following critical compatibility issue with NVDA 2026.1:

  • NVDA will no longer fail to report spelling errors and other font attributes in braille when using NVDA 2026.1.

Further, I am working on teaching Braille Essentials add-on to use the same font attribute tags as NVDA screen reader (implemented since 2024.4) and align the add-on’s document formatting settings interface to resemble NVDA screen reader’s document formatting settings dialog more closely. The goal is to offer a more seamless experience for braille users needing to perform detailed proofreading tasks with Braille Essentials add-on installed and to perform general housekeeping. If you have used any of my add-ons such as ObjPad and StationPlaylist before, this change would sound familiar – my add-ons are known to offer an experience similar to NVDA’s own such as use of NVDA commands as much as possible but applied to add-on situations. The “seamless experience” is just one of the steps I am taking toward the realization of the long-term goal with this add-on: one day, you won’t need the majority of Braille Essentials add-on features to experience NVDA’s upgraded braille support a.k.a. bringing parts of the add-on to the NVDA screen reader.

For folks keeping an eye on the forked repository (link provided before), you can consider 26.05.1 as the start of code divergence from BrailleExtender add-on.

Cheers,

Joseph
