Hello NVDA Community,
Greetings to all.
I hope this message finds you well.
I am writing to seek technical guidance regarding the use of NVDA with Tally ERP 9 at my workplace. As a screen reader user, I rely entirely on NVDA for performing my daily professional tasks. However, I have been facing persistent accessibility issues while operating Tally ERP 9, as NVDA is unable to read or interact with the interface, even when using the Review Cursor.
I am aware that JAWS provides limited access to Tally through cursor switching between the JAWS Cursor and the PC Cursor. Unfortunately, a licensed version of JAWS is not available at my workplace, which has made it difficult to explore that alternative.
I would sincerely appreciate any insights, workarounds, or recommended solutions — such as NVDA add-ons, configuration settings, or third-party tools  that could potentially improve NVDA’s compatibility with Tally ERP 9.
Thank you in advance for your time and support. I look forward to your valuable suggestions.

Kind regards,
Sujatha S

Hi Sujatha,

The last I looked into Tally was back in June this year.  At that time, I had several users who advised that the latest version of their software, Tally Prime, is now completely inaccessible with all screen readers.  The previous version, Tally ERP 9.6, apparently worked with Jaws, but not NVDA or other screen readers, but this new version doesn't even work with Jaws I am told, let alone NVDA.

I tried to reach out to them to find out more, and they never bothered replying to me.  I suspect the only way you are more likely to get an answer is through whoever manages the contract with them at your work.

I know we have people using other accounting packages such as Xero with more success, although I appreciate that getting a business to change their accounting software is not easy.  But if Tally won't reply to anyone, let alone work on accessibility, I can't think of many other options.

Kind regards

Quentin

Hello Quentin,

Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful response on the current situation

To provide some background on our setup:
• Our accounting operations rely exclusively on Tally and Excel, so moving to another accounting package is not a viable option at this stage.
• My branch uses Tally ERP 9, while another branch within our organisation has already implemented Tally Prime, so both versions are currently in use across departments.
• It's a government entity, and any software change or transition requires several levels of approval, which makes such changes difficult in the short term.

I'll also try to raise this concern with the Tally team internally through our management, to highlight these accessibility challenges and request their attention to this important issue.

Kind regards,
Sujatha S

Thanks Sujatha,

Do please let us know how you go with your employer and Tally - I'm just curious that they won't even bother replying to me, which is just rude.  I mean, replying to say "We don't care about accessibility and are not changing anything" would ALSO be rude, but at least I'd be clear on where they stood in that case :)  (To be clear, I don't KNOW if that is their position or not - but if they won't reply, they certainly leave it open to that interpretation).

Kind regards

Quentin
