Hello everyone,
Like many of you, I found navigating Google's Gemini AI chat service to be quite a chore with NVDA. I was constantly having to manually move focus between the input box, the side navigation, and the new responses. It seriously disrupted my workflow.
So, I built PageLive, a small, free, and open-source Chrome extension for myself to specifically solve these pain points.
I've found it incredibly useful for:
• Instant Input: Pressing Shift + Esc to immediately start typing my next prompt.
• Quick Review: Pressing Ctrl + Shift + Enter to quickly re-hear the last AI response.
• Conversation Overview: Using the Ctrl + M dialog to see a quick map of the entire chat history and jump to any point.

Since I continue to build this extension for my own daily use and for the wider community, I would be very grateful if any of you are interested in giving it a try.
Any and all feedback, bug reports, or suggestions will be very appreciated as I work to refine it.

• Try the Free Extension: PageLive's chrome web store
• PageLive home page: https://wiscer.org/pagelive
• Report Bugs/Give Feedback: PageLive's Github issue page

Thanks in advance,
Marson / wiscer

Dear Marson,

I've installed Gemini as an app on my Windows 10 PC, but I'll explore the web interface with PageLive and see how it enhances my experience.

Appreciate your hard work in making AI more accessible! Looking forward to trying it out.

Sincerely,

Hello.
I wasn't aware that Gemini was a Windows application.
I don't have much difficulty with the Gemini interface. Recently, NVDA reads the response after Gemini has finished generating it.

Hello,
You are totally right, I should have clarified that. There isn't an official standalone Windows executable for Gemini that you can download from the Microsoft Store.
When I said I installed it, I meant that I installed the webpage itself as a Progressive Web App (PWA) using my browser. This makes the website launch in its own dedicated window without the address bar, tabs, or browser clutter, so it feels and behaves exactly like a native Windows application. I find it really helpful because it creates a clean interface and I can launch it directly from my Start menu or Desktop.
If anyone wants to set it up this way, here is how you can do it in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome:
 * Open your browser and go to the Gemini website.
 * Press Alt + F to open the browser menu.
 * If you are using Edge, arrow down to "Apps" and press Enter. Then look for "Install this site as an app."
 * If you are using Chrome, arrow down to "Cast, save and share" (or sometimes "More tools") and select "Install page as app" or "Create shortcut" (make sure to check "Open as window").
 * A dialog will pop up asking you to name the app. Just press Enter on "Install" or "Create."
It will now appear in your Start menu just like any other program on your computer.
Sincerely,

Thanks for the encouragement. I hope that PageLive could extends support to more web pages to make them more screen reader friendly. As a both sighted and screen reader user I hope I can act as bridge for the screen reader community.

And also thanks for the info about the Gemini PWA. I have installed the Gemini PWA with PageLive extension installed prior on the chrome, and the features works normally.

I hope you could give it a try and being open with the experience. I am all open for suggestions. Thanks a heaps !

Does work quite nicely in web interface of gemini discussion, etc. - have installed it in both of the browsers work with most of the time = chrome and brave, which both run chromium engine.

Hi,
Actually that is the first reason why I developed PageLive  *smile
Few months ago Gemini still lack of that feature: screen reader did not automatically read the new response.
It is nice that Gemini finally provide the feature.

I wonder how do you navigate in Gemini web ?
Prior to PageLive, I have to press 'up' key or 'tab' key so many time to hear again the last response, navigate to the previous responses, navigate to the side navigation, or to focus back to the prompt / chat input. Now I save a lot of time and patience using the provided keyboard shortcuts. Keen to know your thoughts.

Few days ago I also noticed that if the response contains keyboard characters such as 'Ctrl + /' it will not be read by screen reader. For instance if the response has text 'Press Ctrl + / to do something', it will only be read by screen reader as 'Press to do something'. I plan to add feature that reveals hidden text like that in the next PageLive release.

Thank you,
Marson

I think its great that people are developing improved access to these engines and thank them for these efforts. I wonder if there is a difference between my default, currently Firefox, in the way the Gemini page loads, however?

I tried Gemini again with Firefox last night and it was still fine. I Landed immediately in the Ask Gemini  edit field prompt and again the answer was accessible with , normal heading commands. I do have to press escape and control home to jump to the top of the page before using H to navigate by heading to the answer.

I have not tried it with chrome or Brave though so the way the page is rendered to a screenreader may be different there.

I used something along lines of NVDA+space to toggle off forms mode after had been notified that it had responded, and then shift+H to jump up to previous heading, which would mostly/generally be the latest response - each part of the chat had a heading, but sometimes your own content would be misformatted, etc.

Hello,

On my version of Edge, the Apps is under a more menu.

I installed Chat GPT, Gemini, and Copilot as a web App.

Best

Hi David,

I believe the way Gemini loads in Firefox is identical with the way it loads in Chrome. Sadly, the PageLive extension is currently available as a chromium based extension only, not including Firefox. I might develop for Firefox extension if it could be beneficial to some number of people.

You are right. Gemini's latest answer / response could be accessible with several approaches, one of which is like the one you described. However that strategy still requires multiple steps: press escape, press Heading 2 until reach the latest question / prompt. In my experience, I often have more than 10 times to ask & answer back and forth. I will be required to press Heading 2 multiple times. Not to mention each answer mostly contains multiple Heading 2.

PageLive (chrome extension) allows us to hear again the latest answer by only pressing Ctrl + Shift + Enter.

Thanks,
Marson

Hi Jacob,

Yeah, first we have to change to browse mode by pressing 'NVDA + Space' or just 'Esc'.
Then pressing 'Shift + 2' will jump the focus to each heading of the response until we reach the latest prompt / question. Afterward we need to press the down arrow to read content one line at a time.

If we have multiple prompts and responses in a single chat, we will be required to press 'Shift + 2' multiple times.

PageLive allows us to hear again the latest response by pressing 'Ctrl + Shift + Enter'.
To get a snapshot and jump to any prompts or responses of the current chat, press 'Ctrl + M' to show the Content Map, choose the prompt / response we want to jump to, then press Enter.

I found those, and a few more features really help me to use the Gemini. I hope it also could benefit others too.

Cheers,
Marson

Fully agree with you - that's why have installed it under brave/chrome, and archived the shortcuts in my background notetaker software for review/reference.

Hi Jacob,

You don't need to save the shortcuts. Press 'Ctrl + /' to show a dialog. Few lines from the top, or just press '2' for Heading 2, there is the section for the shortcuts.

Additional info:
The 'Ctrl +/' is to show dialog containing information about the page, such as title of the chat.
The title of the chat, Heading 1, is placed at the top of the dialog. It is a button. If pressed, it will move focus to the related chat in the chat list in the side navigation of Gemini's page. From there you can press Tab and up / down arrow to select chat you want to load.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Marson

The extension is not working for me. I added the PageLive extension on Brave, restarted the browser, and confirmed that the extension was switched on and that it had access to gemini.google.com. Yet, when in Gemini, pressing Ctrl+m, Ctrl+/, and Ctrl+Alt+a does nothing; pressing Shift+Esc opens Brave’s Task Manager. I am using Brave Browser version 142.1.84.141 on a Windows 11 machine.

Hi  Bhavya,

Thank you very much for the effort and the feedback.

I never used Brave before, but I will download and give it a try.
I hope I can produce the mentioned error & find the solution.

Marson
