FW: Emulation of the DoubleTalk Synthesizer Now Available as an NVDA Add-on

I used to have a DoubleTalk synthesizer too, and this sounds very close to what I remember.
From the Tech-VI list owner:
Back in the 1990s, ASAP became my DOS screen reader of choice, along with the DoubleTalk synthesizer. While DoubleTalk had an electronic voice compared to today’s human-sounding speech engines, it was a bit more human-sounding compared to many of its competitors of that time. Its pronunciation was good, it had, to my ear, a very calming voice, it was very responsive and the hardware was inexpensive. There is now a DoubleTalk emulation available as an NVDA add-on. It’s remarkable as it is quite responsive and using it takes me back to a time when computing was very different compared to the way it is today.

A software emulation of the Doubletalk PC is now available as an NVDA addon. A build of the project can be found at https://datajake.braillescreen.net/TTS/SynthesizersForNVDA/doubletalkpc.nvda-addon.

Before my son was born last October I’d been poking at the Monologue synthesizer from 1992/3, which predated Doubletalk, to try and make it run on modern systems.
There are now 2 different ports of it available:
Mine, which is a rewrite of the original, and an emulated version for the true, authentic experience.
It’s been a bit of a run on vintage speech synthesis this month!
Obviously the Doubletalk PC emulator is a slightly newer thing, but it’s very interesting stuff.
