Hello NVDA Discussion,
Is there a way to quickly stop NVDA from freezing whenever I restart the computer?
The keyboard becomes inactive, and I need to correct this by shutting off and restarting the computer up to four times in a row.
I found an answer involving multiple steps on the groups.io forum but would prefer a shorter process if one exists.
I have windows-11, Chrome browser, and all-in-one computer. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried a reinstall of NVDA?

Or, turn off the automatic start up of NVDA and set Narrator to start at logon and after logon, then once the computer is up and launch NVDA.

It sounds like there is a conflict somewhere when NVDA is loading and maybe having Narrator running while you are starting NVDA will help identify it.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the suggestion to use Narrator on start-up. I think from the sounds of things, too many programs are starting nearly at the same time, and hence the NVDA freeze occurs. It's a guess.
I have also heard of a situation where sighted users are experiencing similarly minus NVDA or any screen reader.
The computer is due for its annual tune-up soon, so I may just take your advice and at tune-up time, have this start issue addressed.

If you leave the PC for a couple of minutes, does NVDA and everything else recover?  Working around it might not actually "solve" the problem, but instead might simply be giving the computer enough time to finish what it was doing which was taking all the resources in the first place so it just seems like it works?  Either way, that should not be considered "normal" and is definitely worth investigating.  If when you start NVDA later on, everything works fine, then it's probably not NVDA as such, just that the problem is presenting itself through NVDA's sluggishness when the PC starts.

HiQuentin and all,
If you leave the PC for a couple of minutes, does NVDA and everything else recover?
No, if I give it two minutes beyond the opening message by NVDA, the keyvboard does not work correctly, in fact does not work at all.
Even tabbing through to press 'okay' while NVDA is speaking the message remains dysfunctional and the message continues. Only serial shut-downs and restarts corrects the issue in time. Thanks for asking.

I am not writing the following just to address you or this thread. I
see this over and over on list after list. In your case as an example,
you have no basis, based on what you wrote to conclude that NVDA is
freezing or is the problem. You say the keyboard stops working and that
NVDA keeps speaking when you press a key such as when trying to tab to
the OK button. If you still have speech, you have no basis to assume
that the screen-reader has stopped functioning. And even if you lose
speech, that doesn't automatically mean the screen-reader has stopped.
It could be the synthesizer that has stopped. In short, when asking
about problems, report details, what happens. Don't report conclusions
with no information about the problem. You have much less chance of
getting good help that way because we don't know what is actually
occurring. All we know is what you say is the problem and we have no
way to evaluate if it is.

While it may be that not letting NVDA run at boot up may stop the
problem at that time, that doesn't mean it is actually stopping the
problem, just stopping one condition under which it occurs. And that
being the case, we don't know if and when it might occur otherwise.

You also mention a message for which you try to get to the OK button.
Does the message have anything to do with the problem? Whether you
think it does or not, when does it occur and what does it say. I'm not
just going into this for one person. I'm saying that when asking for
help with a problem, give details. In many instances it is crucial in
helping others understand or guess better what may be going on and it
may prevent a lot of needless back and forth and advice given that may
be far less likely to apply because people don't understand what the
problem is or may be.

Hello Gene,

I take your words into consideration.
When I boot up the computer, a few moments pass then I hear the sounds of a musical cord, NVDA speaking and reading the message which it opens with that ends with the words 'desktop altk.
So, NVDA is starting during boot-up as requested. Of late, I cannot disrupt the message by tabbing to okay. Pressing control alt delete does not resolve things as an alternative.
Within one minute of time, I shut down and restart the computer, and do this three to four times until wanted behavior occurs at start-up.
It seems too many things are trying to start up at once evidenced by what I hear from the computer itself and including NVDA.
I hope this improves understanding.

Sincerely,
David Russell

Hello NVDA Users,

No, I do not have means to record the start-up process that has lead me to think NVDA is freezing. It is better to say the following:
- I press the power button to start the computer
- A few moments later, a music cord is heard, NVDA starts to say something, is interrupted, and then goes into the message heard on start-up.
- I cannot use the tab key, or any key for that matter on the keyboard to utilize an alternative: this includes control alt delete
- Only solution, power off, hold power button for up to five seconds
- Restart computer fifteen seconds later
- Go through same process three to four times before issue corrects.

Thank you in advance for any further help.

Hi Benjamin, can you tell us what version of NVDA are you using, and the details for the add-on that you are trying to download?
Do you see this issue when you try to download other add-ons?
To copy the details of the selected add-on, please tab to the other details panel, press control+home, then control+shift+end (select all teh text), and press control+c to copy the info to the clipboard.
Then paste it to try to reproduce the error.
Thanks,
Noelia

I'm not sure why you hear the message and what it means. You don't hear
such a message usually when you run NVDA. If you switch to have
Narrator run at boot up, what happens?

If you are saying you hold the power button until power stops to the
computer, that is an improper shutdown and may cause problems. What
happens if you hold the power button for, perhaps half a second then
release it? That should shut down Windows but I don't know, of course,
what happens in your case. Press it and wait a little while to see if
it has shut down, though how you might know, I'm not sure.

And try switching to Narrator on start up and see if anything is different.

from your description this sounds like a hardware issue
something is not firing as it should

my machine does this when it gets cold below 0 at night
takes awhile to boot but does so when warmed up a bit

can you plug the keyboard / mouse into a different usb port
without keyboard input there is very little you can do but power off the
machine

try the simple things like checking cables are firmmly inserted

I agree with Gene,
That is not a healthy way to shut down.
Perhaps Microsoft Disability Answer Desk could log into your computer with you and see what is really going on.
I've had them do that several times over the years.

Yes, I've used the provided info trying to reproduce this with the mentioned add-on, but I don't get any errors.
I suggest you to press NVDA+q, and then down arrow to choose the option to restart NVDA with add-ons disabled and log at the debug level. Then repeat the steps to download an add-on, and, if this doesn't work, go to NVDA menu, Tools submenu, open the log and press control+s to save it. Then attach it in an email and submit it to in...@nvaccess.org
Perhaps they can help you. Perhaps the problem is with some kind of interaction between your network and NVDA.
Hope this helps,
Noelia

David, when everything grinds to a stop, try pressing control+alt+n to restart NVDA.  As others have mentioned, it may not be an NVDA issue.  In relatively rare cases when things stop here, most often restarting NVDA brings it back functioning normally.  I then need to find out what is hanging and, if necessary, kill it through Task Manager.

Have you tried using something like be my AI to determine if there's an error on the screen.
