Hello NVDA Group,

There is no better way to pose this, than as I have done in the subject line of this email.
When nnow ';selectingh text' or 'highlighting text' is the method the same as always: Hold down shift control and press the right arrow key through text you are selecting?
If this has evolved to imply more, where can one read up on the definition and or how to carry this out?
Thanks.

I am not sure exactly what you are asking.

Control+shift+left-or-right arrow selects by word.

Shift+left-or-right arrow selects by character.

Shift+up-or-down arrow selects by line.

Hello,
I am the one who asked about the 'select' key changing in meaning over time. When reading Google A.I. in particular on how to perform a certain computer function, instructions will include the words, Select or highlight.
As a blind user, I know or have known how to select something using control-shift with the right arrow key, especially if the selection involved is somewhat brief in length.
I also note there seems to be a specific keyboard command within NVDA for performing 'selection." So, this too thickens the soup if you will.

I hope this clears up any ambiguity around my question. In short, just what does 'selecting or highlighting' mean and involve to perform this?

It hasn't changed. There is an NVDA way to select but there are many
ways to select in programs with a cursor or in lists.

You can select by character, by word with the left and right arrow keys.
by line using shift and down arrow, in short, any way you move without
using shift will select if you use shift. As far as I know, you can't
select buy paragraph but you can try it and see if my memory is correct.
That is the one exception, as I recall.

Hello everyone,
Gene, thanks for your reply. I will endeavor to inform myself on the 'many ways to select' to use your words. I've been doing the standard commands for cut, paste, select, post to clipboard for two decades now..
Best,
David Russell
