Hi all. I just downloaded the  youtube plus Addon for NVDA. I don't know
why I didn't get this thing ages ago! I have a few questions. First,
will I get any of those annoying adds that love to interupt videos? I
have a few channels I'm subscribed to on youtube that sometimes post
member only videos. Will I be able to watch those videos even though I'm
not paying to support the channel or whatever the members thing does?
I'm very conscious about the security of my system. if I watch a video
using youtube plus, is it possible for me to get any sort of viruses or
malware? Thanks in advance for any help.

The only way to avoid the ads is to pay their price.
However, there is always a skip button after the ad has started playing for a little while, I'm not sure if it is a set length, but 5 or 10 seconds seems preety safe to say there will be a skip button, sometimes accurately labelled as "skip ad" but often it just says "skip, button."
I use Jaws most of the time, and so I just find the skip button and hit spacebar and I'm back to the video.
I have not tried the addon and NVDA.

Unless you are asked to download something, I think you are pretty safe from malware or viruses so long as you have a program running to protect you. I use the built in Microsoft Defender and have had no problems at all in years and years of using that combo.

Shawna,

Taking your three in reverse, because the last one is the one that matters.

The video isn't where your risk is. The add-on is. An NVDA add-on is code running on your machine with the same rights NVDA has, and NVDA has plenty of them. So the security question isn't "can a YouTube video infect me", it's "where did this thing come from". Out of NVDA's own add-on store, that's a reviewed pipeline and you're in reasonable shape. Off a link somebody posted, that's a different conversation.

Member only videos, no. That gate isn't in the page, it's on YouTube's servers. They don't send you the video and let the player hide it, they just don't send it. There's nothing sitting there for an add-on to unlock. Anything claiming otherwise is doing something YouTube treats as a break in, and that's exactly the sort of tool that arrives with the problem you're worried about.

Ads are served from their end the same way. Whether you hear them comes down to what is actually fetching the stream, and that's a question for whoever wrote the add-on rather than for the list.

Richard's right that on the site itself a skip button turns up after a few seconds.

Where did you download it from?

VaShaun

I'm making the following comments not so much for Youtube itself, but
because I think it is important to use an ad blocker in general.  You
may or may not be able to use an add blocker with Youtube.  It appears
that in some regions you can and in others, Youtube blocks them.
Because of unsafe ads, that may be on even reputable sites that may try
to place malware on machines, I wouldn't use a browser today without an
ad blocker.  If a site blocks it, then you will have to decide if you
want to use the site with ads or not.

Youtube is increasingly causing ads to play as a part of the stream for
the video so an ad blocker can't bloc them.  Most ads do have a skip
button on Youtube.
