Good afternoon all

Unfortunately I cannot find any messages in the archive regarding
podcast apps that work with NVDA and Windows 10.

I am a beginner at podcasting. I tried to record with Audacity but only
received noisy feedback when pressing R to start recording. I can't find
any microphone settings in Audacity.

If there is an easier podcast app for a beginner, I would like to hear
about it.

Any help will be welcome.

If you want to record something as it plays, you may have the source set
incorrectly for Audacity. If you want to actually download a podcast,
that is a question I don't know about. But if you want to record, there
is a program called Virtual Recorder which I have and which you don't
have to configure the source for. If you want, I'll look for the
installation file. I doubt the version of the program, which was
modified years ago to make it more accessible, is available except from
people who already have it.

Hi Hettie and Gene,

There was a discussion on the old NVDA groups.io list in 2016
regarding Virtual Recorder:

https://nvda.groups.io/g/nvda/topic/virtual_recorder/1883294

David Moore supplied a download link for Virtual Recorder.
Unfortunately, it stopped working long ago. However, the Wayback
Machine archived the page before it disappeared. Here's a snapshot of
the page from 2019:

https://web.archive.org/web/20190929234834/https://opopanax.net/download/

Just scroll down the page until you reach the entry for Virtual
Recorder and click on the download link.

HTH! :)

Are you talking about recording your own podcast material, or listening
to podcasts, and recording them while they play?

Hi Jacob

I want to do podcasts with a hardware microphone connected via USB port
on my pc. Never done that before therefore very uninformed, that's what
I am asking for any assistance.

If you do use Virtual Recorder for this purpose, use the setting for
sound card in source, and have the microphone plugged in when you
switch, if it isn't already set that way. One thing to remember is that
if you want to pause, use alt p and resume, alt r. If you actually stop
recording, you can't resume in the same file. If you resume, a new file
will be started. You can connect them later, but that is unnecessary if
you use the commands I've given.

Ok, Hettie, I would recommend like others said, trying out virtual
recorder first - clean and simple interface.

Otherwise, yes, I use audacity for things like this, but also use
windows own sound recorder for quick/simple little bits of audio
recording, but there you need to have set the correct microphone in
windows own sound card settings, etc. etc. and would then probably end
up using audacity to tweak result in any case, but anyway.

I think this should allow you to download latest/last version of virtual
recorder - I think the one ongoing issue with it could be that NVDA
ducking audio volume could cause hassles, but anyway - try disabling
that if it's turned on:

Audacity you can pull from:

https://www.audacityteam.org/download/

Another one some people might recommend is reaper - you can run it for
free in trial mode, but I know a lot less about that one, and it does
also possibly require an additional accessibility-enabling extension to
be installed, but have hardly touched it myself.

I use Reaper to be honest. Works beautifully with NVDA.
All the best

I use obs to record as i have stuff going to separate tracks, then I use
reaper to post edit and add the effects necessary. that will be a lot
more than what the OP needs probably, however that is another way to
skin a cat and all.

Hi Jacob

I decided to use Windows Voice Recorder. Then I will import the file to
Audacity to do whatever is necessary to improve the recording.

Thanks to all you kind folk assisting me in this new venture. I keep all
your answers to go back when I need that help.

Do you get proper microphone recordings with Voice Recorder?  If you use
it, you should export to MP3 after editing in Audacity. Voice recorder
creates m4a files.

Gene, while I generally only use windows voice recorder occasionally, to
more or less make sure my microphone is working as it should, the
recording quality is not too bad, and it offers choice to select
recording device, although think it should default to system default
recording device, etc.

Stay well

Hi Gene

Yes, Voice Recorder's recordings are fine. I import the recording into
Audacity if any refining is necessary.

Thanks or all your help.

I haven't checked in Windows 11, but in Windows 10, I see no setting,,
even activating the more button, for choosing recording device.

Why not just do it all in Reaper?
