Hi all,
I’m having trouble getting a HIMS Braille Sense display to work with NVDA. When the braille display is set to Automatic, NVDA never detects the device. If I manually select “HIMS Braille displays” in the Braille settings, NVDA immediately reports: “Cannot load braille display driver.” The display never connects in either case.
To rule out the obvious, I’ve tried multiple USB ports, different cables, and confirmed that Windows does react when the device is plugged in. The Braille Sense is definitely in terminal mode and set to act as a braille display.
I restarted NVDA several times after changing settings, and I also tried running NVDA with add-ons disabled. The error still appears as soon as I choose the HIMS driver.
To eliminate the possibility of a corrupted configuration, I downloaded a fresh portable copy of NVDA and tested with default settings. Automatic detection still fails, and selecting the HIMS driver still gives the same “cannot load braille display driver” message.
On the Windows side, I checked Device Manager for any warnings and reinstalled the HIMS USB drivers. I rebooted afterward and tried connecting the display both before and after starting NVDA. Nothing changed.
I also checked all relevant settings on the Braille Sense itself, including USB connection mode and the screen reader protocol. Everything appears correct.
Finally, I tested on a completely different Windows machine with a clean NVDA installation. The behavior is identical: no detection on Automatic, and the same driver‑loading error when selecting HIMS manually.
At this point I’m not sure whether this is a compatibility issue with this particular Braille Sense model or firmware, or whether something is broken in the HIMS driver in recent NVDA versions.
If anyone has run into this before, or knows of a specific firmware version, NVDA version, or setting that matters for HIMS displays, I’d really appreciate any guidance. I can provide logs if needed.
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
We need (or at least I need) the following information:
I would like to see a debug log (send it to me privately please, and if needed, CC in...@nvaccess.org).
Cheers,
Joseph
