I have just tried to donate £20 via PayPal whilst applying the
latest update via a single donation.
The short experience is that after 4 attempts I have now given up, as on
each occasion the NVDA Donation page just keeps on giving the message "
Sorry there appears to be a problem. Please try again later.
I cannot understand why the donation page remains so complicated. It should
be the easiest page on a web site to receive payments from, rather than
imposing a requirement to interact with multiple drop-down boxes to select
sender currency and recipient currency etc. I don't need to see what my
donation converts to, I just want to make the payment. This whole conversion
requirement we have to go through seems geeky.
PayPal knows I am paying in British pounds, why not just receive it with
the automatic PayPal conversion rather than making us go through all these
hoops?
I don't get these problems with other international transfers.

. Every time I try to process the payment up.

Hi David,

Thanks for the feedback.  Thank you also for trying to donate, and sorry the experience was so frustrating.  The download page (on our site) has donation amounts in Australian dollars.  Once you choose an amount, it sends you to PayPal to complete the payment.  I gather the experience varies between countries and I believe that error you got was entirely from PayPal's side, but I will see if we can look into it from here.

Kind regards

Quentin

I just looked at the donation page and it has real problems. Here is
what it said after I selected an amount by pressing a button.
Donation For NVDA
Amount not shown redacted by me.
Enter amount
A$
AUD

I've already selected an amount by pressing a button. Then, there is
the section I reproduced that I see after pressing the button telling me
to enter an amount. I already did so what's the point?
It says clickable on the enter amount but you only hear it when you up
arrow after passing the field, not when you down arrow.

I see no combo box to select the originating currency. In short, I
found the page completely not usable because it is so unclear as to what
you do and why.

Hello,
I would like to make a donation by credit card since PayPal services are not available in Turkey. However, I am unable to proceed because Turkey is not listed among the country options.
Could you please let me know why Turkey is not included in the available country list?
Best regards.

the recurring donation page was a bit of a pain, but at least that's a set-and-forget job. It's largely a Paypal thing I believe.
Thanks

To expand further, if the point of the enter an amount line is to
indicate that you should use the edit field to do so, it should be above
the edit field. And since it well may be that an amount has been
selected by pressing a button, the line should say something like enter
an amount if you haven't already selected one. it is confusing and not
standard to have such a line below the edit field and I can't be sure
what it's purpose is.

Also, when in browse mode an edit field is seen if you select an amount
with that amount but it is not a standard edit field. If you switch to
forms mode and tab in that area, it is not shown. Neither is the line
about select an amount. In short, the form is completely nonstandard.

Someone suggested that the problems with the site might be problems with
Pay Pal. If so, then perhaps nothing can be done but on the other hand,
can some sort of template and script be designed so the user works with
the NVDA site and in the end the information is sent to Pay Pal without
the user having to deal with nonstandard and confusing interfaces?

Just to clarify my experience if that helps diagnose what is going wrong.

I entered the amount I wanted to donate  on the NVDA payment site and I was then taken to PayPal.
After the 2-factor verification check , I successfully logged into PayPal, and confirmed the donation amount,   and the fact I was paying in British Pounds.  I then got the impression I was then being returned to the NVDA payment site.
It was at this stage I was then confronted with the multiple boxes requiring me to select sender and recipient currency. Again from memory these dropdown boxes were not straightforward, and required a double interaction before you could audibly navigate the currencies options in the dropdown.
I re-entered 20.00 in the edit box, and then in the sender dropdown,  selected British pound  and then Australian Dollars in the recipient currency dropdown.
When trying to submit from this page, it was then I repeatedly received the error saying something had gone wrong and to try again later.
It might be that I was actually still in PayPal rather than being returned to the NVDA payment site but, if so, it was a PayPal page I have never experienced before.

Perhaps you are seeing something different than someone who is not
signed into Pay Pal. I looked at the donate page when not signed in,
intending to use a credit card and I activated something indicating that
that is what I would use. I didn't go farther because I was asked for
credit card information and I was just looking at the site.

Why not just have a PayPal Email address where anyone can just send a donation from PayPal itself?

Hi Gene,

Once you select a button with an amount on our page, it then takes you to PayPal.  Depending on your country, if you aren't in Australia, it may have options for currency conversion, which you may or may not be able to edit.  The original page on our site is in Australian Dollars.  We could probably be clearer on that, but once you do select an amount, it takes you to PayPal and is then out of our control.

If you prefer, you can go to PayPal yourself and send money to ad...@nvaccess.org (Ideally do put donation or similar in the description so we know that's definitely what it's for).

Kind regards

Quentin

Re donating in Turkey, we use PayPal for the credit card transaction (so your card details never come to us).  It is possible to donate via credit card without a PayPal account, but it may be they only allow from certain countries.

Hi David, you would still have been on the PayPal site - you don't come back to the NV Access page until the payment is complete.  I must admit I can't offer a suggestion as to why it might not have worked in this case.

the problem is that as far as I can tell, pay pal tells you to enter an
amount and one is already shown on the page. If this can just be
skipped or ignored after you specify an amount on the NVDA page, this
should be stated.

Hi Steve,

You can - ad...@nvaccess.org - please do put donation or similar in the description so we know that's what it is for.  We tend to promote the page as it is usually relatively straight forward.  I'm not sure if PayPal have changed things recently and made it tricker, or if a number of people have always had trouble and jumped on the thread now (in either case, thanks everyone for letting us know!)

I'm not sure what the best option is - if we added more payment methods they'd each come with their own strengths and weaknesses, and add complexity for users in choosing the right one but we're always open to improvements.

Kind regards

Quentin

Hi Quentin,

I actually find it difficult to donate directly from the donations page. Since I already have your PayPal ID saved in my account, I usually just log in and make the donation directly from my PayPal dashboard, which works fine.

However, one persistent issue I have with PayPal is the currency selection. Since I am donating in INR, PayPal only gives me the US$ option. This means I have to use external conversion tools to calculate exactly how much I'm sending in my local currency.

Hello. PayPal allows any donation/payment to be made either in the default currency that is already preconfigured or in the local currency, where you have information about the final amounts, conversion rate, etc. You just need to choose the appropriate dropdown boxes for the result to appear. Thank you.

As far as I can see, you don't have any such options if you donate with
a debit or credit card. If I am correct and the amount you specify is
assumed to be in Australian dollars, that should be explained on the
NVDA page to avoid possible confusion.

I've been meaning to donate but I haven't.  Now, when I tried, I see the
frustration people have.  It's so unpleasant and frustrating that I'm
really tempted to forget it, though I will donate.  First, when you
place a donate amount on the NVDA page, then are sent to Pay Pal, you
are shown the amount you specified in Australian dollars.  I selected
pay with credit or debit card. Once I filled in the information, and it
is not standard, for example, if you type a slash when giving the
expiration date, it is not accepted, you must enter the date without
typing a slash, and if you arrow through the fields it is very confusing
to know which field you are on, the only way to know is to tab through
them.  When you finish and press the donate now button, you are shown
the amount you are going to donate, evidently in the currency of your
country.  the rate was very different from what I specified on the NVDA
site and there was no way to change the amount.  You could select things
like convert with Pay Pal and something else, but I closed the page
because the amount in American currency I wanted to contribute was
different enough from Australian dollars that I wanted to change it.

There may be no way to make working with Pay Pal better, but there
should be some sort of guide or instructions on the NVDA page to stop
what will likely stop many people from donating.  How many people would
think not to include a slash in the expiration date, for example, when
what is shown as what is expected contains a slash?

I've been shopping online for decades and have never manually put a slash in the card expiry field. ...

Not to disagree the process isn't a bit convoluted but I've shopped at dozens of places and never used the slash as I say. We do need to be careful in taking *our* experience as *the* experience.

Thanks

Sean

Hi Quentin,

If it’s PayPal handling it, why can’t the amount be in the donator’s local currency by default?

All the best

Thanks for that.

I think if you do it by Email, you’ll do it in your local currency, and it will be converted at your end.

Hi Gene,
I must admit, I am quite used to not submitting slashes, very often, when you type the month, it jumps to the next edit field, that's why you don't need to enter it manually.

Hi Antonio,

Thank you so much for the guidance!

Following your advice, I was able to successfully complete a donation transaction today directly from my PayPal account. It turns out I just needed to look for those dropdown boxes you mentioned.

I was able to select my own currency (INR) as the sender, and it was so cool to see PayPal automatically calculate the exact amount the receiver would get in AUD. It made the whole process much clearer and more straightforward than my previous attempts.

P.S: The drop- down option to select currency on PayPal is a bit tricky, but that is another conversation I should have with PayPal

I’m glad to have that sorted out—thanks again for the help!

@Quentin sent some LOVE to the Team, much appreciated! Please confirm receipt of the same.

I didn't say not typing a slash will lead to the information being
rejected. I'm saying that usually, a slash is accepted and in this
case, the format example shown above or below, whatever it is, the field
specifically shows a slash. In such a case, the common standard is that
the form will accept what is shown when typed.

Here is part of Gemini's answer to my question about Pay Pal.

PayPal’s system is notoriously rigid because it’s built on very old
"legacy" code. While their modern interface shows a nice example like
MM/YY, their back-end processing (specifically the Payflow and API
systems) often strictly requires a 4-digit or 6-digit number string
(like 1228 or 122028) with zero special characters.

The Conflict: The "Help" text shows a slash to make it look
human-friendly, but the "Validation" code is checking for a strictly
numeric string.

The "Rejection": When you type the slash, the system sees 5 characters
instead of the 4 it expected. Instead of being smart enough to delete
the slash for you, it simply throws an "Invalid Format" error.
Are there many complaints?
Yes, a massive amount. If you look at developer forums (like GitHub) or
user communities (like Reddit), you'll find thousands of threads from
both users and business owners.

For Users: It creates "friction." Many users assume their card is being
declined or that they’ve mistyped the year, when in reality, it's just
the slash.

For Merchants: Business owners hate this because it causes "Cart
Abandonment." A customer gets annoyed that the date won't "take," gives
up, and leaves the site.

Which is one reason I say an explanation of how to work with Pay Pal
should be on the NVDA donation page.

It should be specified not to type a slash in the expiration date field,
to type nothing but numbers in the phone number field, no spaces nor
anything else, and when moving in the select a state field, you need to
move to the desired state and press enter on it. this is not a typical
combo box where moving to something selects it. The choices actually
say radio item or something similar, implying that moving to an item
selects it but it doesn't. Also, people should be instructed to stay in
forms mode and tab through fields.

Pay Pal is not a standard site.

Hi,

Thank you for your explanation.

As I understand it, even when donating by credit card without an account, the payment may still be processed through PayPal’s credit card infrastructure. Since PayPal does not operate in Turkey, this might be the reason why Turkey is not available in the country list.

Could you please confirm if this is the case? Also, is there any alternative donation method available specifically for donors in Turkey?

general. And did you read the Gemini quote I presented on the subject?

Did you even read the message you quote below yours with any care?

Here is a correction. Gemini hallucinated. It said there are thousands
of complaints. Now, by asking more questions and doing traditional
Internet searches, the true picture appears to be that while there are
complaints about this, they aren't nearly as much as the bot claimed.
Nonetheless, the field does not accept slashes, which generally are
accepted and the example specifically shows a slash, if people check.
Even if this problem prevents only a small or not too large a number of
people from completing donations, it is unnecessary and should be
addressed in instructions.

I don't know whether slashes are generally accepted so much as ignored. In my experience, there are either usually 2 fields already separated by a slash, 1 field which doesn't care if there is a slash, or the form is designed in such a way that you choose the year from a dropdown anyway. I can't think of a time in my online shopping history where a slash has been compulsory.

That aside, I think we're hacking away at a tree when we aught be worrying about the forest here. Generally speaking it's bad practice to need to provide so specific instructions for a task that a user can't then generalise and take those instructions to use someplace else. So while I'm all for maybe adding some explanation to the donate page, a specific training section on PayPal just for donations seems excessive. Teach people to use the web and forms generally, yes. Mention outliers that don't conform to standards, by all means - the selection of an American State on the PayPal site is a good example. But if we end up trying to handhold to such a specific degree for every single website, the user is stuck when encountering a different site, and as soon as that specific site changes the instructions are out of date anyway.

I won't discuss the form further unless I have something new to say, but
again, as I said in a previous message, I didn't say a slash is
required. I said on this site it is rejected and that is not standard.

Some people get confused. You can see threads on read it, for example,
where someone is trying to use a credit card and the expiration date is
not accepted. In these threads, people usually get incorrect advice,
general boiler plate suggestions and not the don't use a slash. I saw
one thread where the questioner even said he used a slash. Requiring
that a slash not be used while showing in the example that one is, is
just plain bad and improper practice. Not accepting a slash is not
The purpose of the page isn't to teach people to fill out forms, it is
to discuss the nonstandard elements of this form.

To clarify, whether they are just ignored or accepted amounts to the
same thing. If ignored, you can type it and have no problems and the
same is true if actually accepted.

On this site, however, using a slash causes the form to be rejected.

Thanks Rui, I had seen conflicting information about whether Stripe was available in Turkey.  As I mentioned previously, we are looking at what we can do to improve this experience so hopefully we can find a way which improves things for our users and donors in Turkey as well as more generally.

And yes, Selçuk, you are right - because it is done through PayPal, even without an account, that is likely why it doesn't work currently.

Kind regards

Quentin
