Hi everyone,

For months, I have been fighting a systemic barrier that affects many of us in the accessibility community: the complete lack of native screen reader support and accessibility APIs in the pre-boot environment (UEFI/BIOS Firmware) across major manufacturers like HP.

When firmware updates or system configurations restrict our ability to control our own hardware independently, it becomes a major digital accessibility violation.

To address this, I have officially submitted a detailed report to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding these corporate and technical restrictions that lock blind users out of core hardware control.

Quentin from NV Access mentioned that this topic comes up here from time to time, and since collective action is far more powerful than individual efforts, I strongly encourage everyone who faces these firmware barriers to submit their own complaints to the DOJ.

You can send your complaints and feedback directly to the DOJ Disability Rights Section via email at:
CRT.Disabi...@usdoj.gov

Let’s raise our voices together to push for native firmware accessibility standards!

Best regards,
Obaida Tamimi

Hi Obaida,

Can also international people send that in or is it just for US people only?

Btw those who have HP machines might be more lucky than others.

HP has a BIOS Configuration Utility where you can export the BIOS settings to a text file.

Then you can edit this and re import.

Greetings,

Simon

Hi Obaida,

Forgot to write this.

Maybe you might post the message here that you wrote to the US DOJ so people send in the same or similar info.

Let’s see if this time they implement something.

Greetings,

Simon

Lenovo’s think bios config tool is also purportedly accessible, just for adding info.

sure , as well as lenovo advantage

but of course, it's accessible when your Windows does boot with a working screen reader already installed.
