reading screenshots in an email

Hi all,

My mom sent me two screenshots in an email and of course JAWS can’t read them. Is there any way I can read these or do I need to get sighted help? I’m using the latest versions of NVDA 2025 and Windows 11 24h2 Pro and M365. Thanks

Hi,

 

I am already running Whatsapp Desktop on Windows 11 and it is accessible with the Whatsapp Plus NVDA add on.

 

However for my 2^nd whatsapp account I have downloaded Whatsapp Beta from  the Microsoft Store but it does not work with Whatsapp Plus NVDA add on..does anyone have a fix for this problem ?

Both JAWS and NVDA have OCR features that will let you at least partly read these.

You can use OCR or AI, depending on your preferred option.

 

• For NVDA, Read section 10 of the user manual, content recognition, or look up the Content Describer  or  OpenAI addons.
• For JAWS, obviously you can look  at the help file. There’s also the Webinar, JAWS OCR, what it is and how it works!  And their information about Picture Smart AI.

What copy of jaws are you using because  insert spacebar then P then Shiffed F Will describe the images to you if you download them to your computer if you are on 2025 . Are you new to JAWS and screen Reder options

Hi,

WhatsApp will be rolling out a new app that is based on the WhatsApp web interface.

It is a bit tricker to navigate but here you have some hints.

When you are reading messages, if you are on the type message field , switching to browse mode and pressing the up arrows will read the latest messages.

If you want to go through your conversations, press i and shift + i to go to the different list items, these are your chats which are part of a list.

Context menu items appears as buttons which are rendered on message focus, so what you need to do is focus one of th emessages in browse mode, press NVDA + space, and then press right arrow, then the ocntext menu button appears.

Hi.

You have a few options.

You can use AI to read your screenshots, either download the files and pass them through gpt, or get an API key for GPT and use the OpenAI addon.

Simpler way is to open the screenshot, click fullscreen, use object navigator to go to the parent photos app and use NVDA OCR with NVDA+r.

Firstly, you are mailing the NVDA users group and not the JAWS users group. You can read images using the OCR function in NVDA by pressing the key combination NVDA Key + R. There is a similar functionality in JAWS but I do not remember the key combination. Another thing you can try is download the Be My Eyes application for Windows. It is a great tool to help describe images and has AI features which you can use to ask more about the image.

In that case, I think the better is to save the mail as a PDF and perform the OCR with NAO, TeseeractOCR or other...

I believe this can be done if you have a PayPal account. Your PayPal account should be linked to a bank account/ credit card etc. The monthly charges should go through. However, this is just my assumption as I have only made one time donations so far using PayPal.

Hi,

When you say it does not work, what's up? What's it doing?

They're modifying whatsapp web interface quite a bit these days, maybe they will come up with a better solution.

Anyway the table for messages is now a bit more accessible. I still wouldn't use the chat list table as every time you focus, it opens that chat, so it will mess up your unread filter count. but you can use I and shift I to move through items in browse mode.

This one is unstable, sometimes it works sometime it does not work, not sure why. 😢

I manage to install tamper monkey  but the link to download the scripts says “page not found”

Maybe the URL  was not copied correctly ?
